Garden

2014-15 Garden

March 9, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Our garden this year has produced spectacularly! As usual, I took pictures early on, with full intentions of taking more when it was at its peak, and as usual, I never got follow-up pictures taken. We, specifically the boys, have put up bushels of produce—we will have all the pickles, of three varieties, that we want, plus 95 pounds of sourkraut and about that much plain cabbage in the freezer; lots of zucchini; all the lettuce we can eat, and so far what looks like a great crop of tomatoes coming on. The onions are nearly ready to harvest, and we’ve canned a great many green beans and carrots. The potatoes have a blight, but we’re eating a lot now. Corn was too dry, and crowded out by too many pumpkins in the patch.

The early garden, in mid-December: Corn and pumpkins, with tomatoes to the left and potatoes beyond them.

Cabbage, cukes, beans.

Carrots, radishes, beets, peas, lettuce

The entire garden, in the process of being weeded for the first time.  Below is a mound across the creek, on which we planted zucchini and pumpkins. Failure! Too dry.

Tomatoes fill up this small garden.

Peppers are up against the house, by the lemon tree.

We filled in this space around the rhubarb plants with tomatoes, tomatillos, Cape Gooseberries (like ground cherries), and zucchini.

I did get two pictures recently! This was the day we pulled up all the rest of the cabbage. This one head of Savoy Cabbage was so pretty I got a picture of it.

I’ve learned that one way to save space in the garden is to plant the cabbages very close. They can be 1 foot from each other, in every direction, and thrive. No weed problems there!

We had several wheelbarrow loads of cabbage that day, and ended up with three bushels when it was all trimmed. I read aloud a very exciting story while the boys trimmed it, and the cow loved eating all the “waste”.

When we thinned the carrots, the boys were happy to find some funny ones:

All in all, we’re feeling quite blessed with this year’s garden.

New Year’s Day Harvest

January 1, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

First, I want to wish all of you a wonderful 2015! We’ve had a lovely New Year’s Day today. It’s a lot cooler than yesterday, which I appreciate, but sunny and beautiful. I went out to the garden this morning and found a lot of things ready to pick. We are eating well these days! This afternoon, I went to the garage to get something, and made a side trip to check on the barrel of apple cider vinegar I’ve been brewing since last March. One of the boys had gotten a small cup of it this morning, and it tasted just slightly weaker than the double-strength vinegar we usually buy from a stockfeeds store. He thought there was a scoby in it (like kombucha). I looked, and sure enough there was a huge “mother” floating  on top!

That was exciting. There were also a lot of fruit flies in it, so I decided it was time to strain and bottle all of it. We ended up with 21 liters, just over 5 gallons, for the price of a rubbish bin (maybe $15). The apples were free from the roadside, and the only other ingredient was water. To buy that much vinegar at the stockfeeds shop costs about $80. I’m pleased with this experiment!

I put the “mother” in a jar to save till I start the next batch, so hopefully it will work even faster than this batch. Sure looks ugly! It’s kind of rubbery, a lot like a kombucha scoby.

Esther wanted to see what the cows would do with the vinegary apples, so she dumped them out in the paddock. They wanted to eat them, but the acid was apparently kind of hard for them to handle. They keep coming back for more, though!

Catch-Up Time

December 21, 2013 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Just some random pictures from the past month around here.

The youngest participant in the library’s summer reading program!

We removed all the books from our shelves and packed them. He thought it made a nice place to hide!

Not sure what this was all about!

The books I weeded out of our collection–I think he lost his balance as he brought them in for me to sort and list!

The youngest (Nathan) loves to play with toy animals. When I told him it was time for bed, he was holding all three of these ducks, and very carefully set them down. I had to laugh when I saw how they were arranged in order of size, and in a straight line!

We have a cute visitor this week–a California quail!

Our harvest from the garden a few days ago. I have a hard time believing that this is the equivalent of the middle of June in Michigan!

Two of our cuties–numbers 5 and 7 (James and Nathan).

Winter Harvest, and random pictures

June 6, 2013 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

One thing I really enjoy about our climate here is being able to grow things year-round.  Right now, it is the equivalent of early December in the Northern Hemisphere.  I harvested our salad and some vegetables for soup today, and spent some time weeding.  After spending six hours teaching the children, weeding is a great way to relax and reset.

Today’s harvest–lettuce, radishes, green onions, parsley, and celery.

He was waiting for me to fill containers with weeds, so he could dump them into a larger container for me.

There was snow on the hills around us early last week.  We went to Dead Boring that day, and enjoyed the beautiful snowfall on the way there.

The Hurunui River, looking towards the sea.

Farmed deer near Greta Valley.

Coming over the Omihi Saddle into the Waipara Valley. You can see the Southern Alps in the distance.

A hill to the west of us.

And, some pictures of the children. Elijah was doing school, and baby wanted to do the same.

Jealousy–I was holding Mr. Sweetie, and baby had to get in between!

Tired baby–he fell asleep being pushed in a stroller outside, and couldn’t wake up for supper.

One of baby’s many funny poses!

Baby thinking about the hat someone put on him!

James dumping a container of weeds.

Beetroot

May 6, 2013 by NZ Filbruns 1 Comment

I have about a dozen empty jars left, of varying sizes, so I decided to start processing the beetroot.  I knew they were getting rather large, so I sent Seth out to pull four of them.  Well, “rather large” turned out to be an understatement!  This is the biggest: all 10 pounds of it!
All four together filled my 20-quart stock pot to the brim.  I think we’ll have enough beetroot this year!  How many quarts do you suppose I’ll end up with from these four beets?

Dirt!

October 20, 2012 by NZ Filbruns 3 Comments

We finally got the new raised-bed gardens filled with soil today.  We had been trying to decide, for a month and a half or so, what to fill them with.  A local man had topsoil for sale, but it would have cost nearly a thousand dollars to get that.  We thought about using straight compost, since Gayle can get that cheaply from work, but that wouldn’t be good for growing tomatoes.  There is a pile of rubbish and clay pushed up in the “pear orchard” near our house, so we decided to have a friend who has a Bobcat, a digger, and a big dump truck come today to sift through that pile and get what’s good from it, then fill in with compost.  Apparently, the boys told our landlord’s son we were going to do that, and yesterday morning he came to the house and told me that his dad’s cousin, another farmer here in the area, had a pile of topsoil to get rid of–for nothing!  He took Simon over to show him where it was.  Simon came home saying it might be enough to fill half of one of the two beds, but I just knew that if God had given us that soil it would  be enough for the job.  When our friend arrived this morning, he went and got a load.  Immediately, we knew we had plenty of soil!  He ended up bringing three loads, and smoothing it out, and then he and Gayle went over to where Gayle works and got a load of compost.  Once we get the smoothing out finished, it looks as though we’ll have a couple of lovely garden plots!

Baby watched from the window in front of the computer desk–if he climbs on the shelf under the desk he can easily see out.One bed is right out the kitchen window–see how close the digger was to the window!

Baby loved watching!

The boys are sure enjoying this! I made this boy stay inside or on the porch while the machines were moving around. He didn’t like that very well. He made the best of it though, and used Baby’s lookout spot.

Salad!

December 21, 2011 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Our raised beds are growing beautifully!  We’ve had a cool, wet early summer so far, and the lettuce is gorgeous.  We’re eating huge salads twice a day.  The herbs are doing well in their tires, too.

These rose bushes are near the garden.

Thyme

Rosemary, thyme, sorrel, oregano, and sage

I brought in half the radishes from the carrot bed one morning!

Mud and Boys and Life

December 11, 2011 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

This has been another normal, interesting week.  The “mud” in the title comes from Wednesday evening, when the three youngest boys slipped outside after supper when I wasn’t watching.  They went into the garden, which they had been told before supper not to do, and played in the mud.  I’m sure it was fun–but what a mess!  I didn’t get a picture of it, but it looked worse than this one from Michigan two and a half years ago!  This time, they were coated from head to toe in thick, sticky clay!  Because they had disobeyed, and because they knew beforehand what the penalty is for getting muddy, I had no compunctions about hosing them down with a cold-water hose.  I had  to hose and rub with my hands to get the quarter inch of clay mud off their clothes, then had them take off their clothes, and hosed them again, and then sent them to the bathroom to finish off with a cold shower!  And it wasn’t a warm evening.  They all decided they don’t want that again.  While the youngest watched the other two getting cleaned up first, his lip stuck out farther and farther as he considered his coming fate.

One warm evening, the kitchen door was open, and Ginger came along to see what we were doing.
I spent a couple of days this week sorting clothing.  Does this look anything like a secondhand shop? or a garage sale?  We’ve been blessed with lots of hand-me-down clothes for the boys!

Next step:  sort through what each boy had in his drawers/closet and decide what to keep and what to put away/throw away.  Here is Seth’s stack (think he had more than he needed?):

One rainy day, Esther decided to make a batch of bread, since it always raises better on that sort of day.  I gave instructions while I worked on clothing.  It turned out pretty nice!

One day this week the sun shone!  I did lots of laundry (and it all got dry!) and we weeded the strawberry bed.  We found a number of ripe strawberries.  Yumm!  We have to get them quickly or the slugs eat them.

Aren’t Esther’s kids cute?

We went to Gore Bay for a baptism this afternoon, and when I mentioned we wanted a family picture, one of the ladies there offered to help take one.  It took quite a few tries to get one with everyone’s eyes open, and this is the best.

After the baptism, we went to the home of the girl who was baptized for a meal.  Joe discovered this wheelbarrow and had so much fun with it that they gave it to him when we left!

So there you have it–several tiny glimpses into our week.  It was a good one!

More Spring Gardening

November 2, 2011 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

It always amazes–and challenges me–to see how the children ALL want to do whatever I’m doing.  This afternoon I went out to transplant tiny tomatoes into individual pots.  Within minutes, all six children had joined me, and were helping.  A couple of boys got started planting pumpkin seeds that they had saved from the pumpkins they grew themselves last year in newspaper pots, and Esther worked on the tomatoes.  They can’t wait to plant in the big garden, which was plowed this afternoon.  Next week it should be tilled and we can plant!

Planting a pumpkin seed.

Setting the tomato seedlings on top the woodbox, where they will have plenty of light and warmth.

Spreading the bird netting over the strawberry patch–the first strawberry is nearly ripe!
