Sleeping Bear Dunes

July 4, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

At the end of our first week in Michigan, we took my mom and sister to a memorial service in Traverse City; the woman who died was a sister of someone I’ve known all my life, so we attended the service as well. Afterward, we drove to Sleeping Bear Dunes and had fun exploring a little around there. Our children had never been there before, and neither had Gayle. We all enjoyed seeing the beautiful scenery. This first photo was at the edge of Traverse City; there were a couple of railroad overpasses with bridges like this.

24-IMG_2542

Grand Traverse Bay was beautiful, and there were a lot of sail boats on it.

25-IMG_2544

As far as we know, this is one of the “Tall Ships”, replicas of the sailing vessels used on the Great Lakes a few hundred years ago. It was sailing across Grand Traverse Bay.

26-IMG_2550

The Traverse City area is famous for its cherry orchards.

27-IMG_255128-IMG_2552

The highway between Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes is straight and flat, compared to what we’re used to at home!

29-IMG_2553

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore! There are two inland lakes, and the dunes are on the other side of the overlook here.

30-IMG_255431-IMG_2555

Lake Michigan is off in the distance.

32-IMG_2557

See the Manitou Islands off in the distance? There are two of them. The story goes that a mother bear and her two cubs were swimming across Lake Michigan to escape a forest fire in Wisconsin. They were almost to land when the cubs tired and drowned, forming  North and South Manitou Islands. The mother reached land and laid down to watch for her cubs, forming the sand dunes.

33-IMG_255834-IMG_256035-IMG_256136-IMG_256237-IMG_256338-IMG_2564

The drive we took through the park wound around through forests like this.39-IMG_256740-IMG_2570

A favorite stop along the way is this overlook. You’re not supposed to go down to the lakeshore here, but many people do anyway—and then have to climb the 300-400 foot, steep sandy slope. We didn’t allow our boys to do it.

41-IMG_257142-IMG_257343-IMG_257644-IMG_2577

Our little people loved playing in the sand dune above the trail. Mr. Imagination slid down on his tummy several times! I took his clothes off and shook the sand out before we got in the van again.

Grandma noticed that this large boulder beside the trail was actually a huge Petosky stone. This particular type of fossilized coral is the Michigan state stone.

Traveling to Michigan

July 1, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

It is an enormous task to prepare to take a family of nine from New Zealand to America. It did help that I made lists, over the last couple of weeks, of jobs that needed done before taking off, and on Saturday before we left we started a list of what needed to happen each of the last three days. On Monday, I finished the sewing that had to be done, while Gayle and the boys got things done outside. There were also a lot of little jobs to do, and nearly everything was accomplished. Tuesday, I thoroughly cleaned both refrigerators, and we packed clothes. It took about three hours to do that, even with all the older children packing their own! Then, we left the suitcases open so we could put things in as we remembered them. Wednesday we cleaned house and did all sorts of other miscellaneous jobs to get ready. By evening, everything felt ready to go; it sure helped to have done the packing a couple of days ahead of time. I was relaxed enough that evening, feeling like everything was ready, that I was actually able to sleep that last night! Here is our lineup of suitcases—and Little Miss dumping mine!08-IMG_2443

We had six bags to check at the airport, so took a picture of them in case it would be needed. Thankfully, nothing got lost!

09-IMG_2446

Taking off on the first flight!

10-IMG_244711-IMG_2449

It was clear when we took off from Christchurch, and we had a beautiful view of the Waimakariri River from the air.

12-IMG_2454

There was a heavy cloud cover at times, but I believe the sandy area in the lower right in this photo is where the boys and I went to a beach with our homeschool group a couple of months ago, near Amberley.

13-IMG_2456

The Kaikoura Mountains were spectacular! I think this sharp-pointed one is Mount Manakau, which we can see all the way from Christchurch.

14-IMG_2461

This is near Blenheim.

15-IMG_2466

We enjoyed seeing Picton from the air. We’ve been on both sides of the peninsula sticking out in the middle of the bay in the center of the picture. You can see a log yard on the closer side of that peninsula, and on the other side, the big white things are the ferries that go to the North Island.

16-IMG_2468

The Marlborough Sounds from the air.

17-IMG_2469A mountain on the North Island.18-IMG_2472

Sunrise over the Pacific. There were clouds below us all the way across. It was beautiful, with a full moon shining on them, but the sunrise was even more beautiful. This flight took 13 hours, which seemed to be about forever. The three youngest slept fairly well, and I think Gayle got some decent sleep. Esther and I only slept an hour or two each, and the three big boys didn’t do well at all. We were all glad to land on the ground in Houston!

19-IMG_2475

Mexico

20-IMG_2477

We had seven hours in Houston. Some friends who live about 2 1/2 hours from there met us at the airport and took us to a park, where they fed us. It was so good to get out of the airport and have fresh air and room to move—not to mention the wonderful fellowship!

21-IMG_2484

We spent a day in Ohio resting and recovering and spending time with Gayle’s family, and then took off for Michigan! We have been loaned a van to use by a family who are serving as missionaries in Africa, so we have our own transportation, which is wonderful. 63-IMG_2607

22-IMG_2488

The children enjoyed seeing sights that are so different from New Zealand. We don’t have barns and silos like this back home!

1-IMG_0979

We saw a couple of large wind farms in Ohio and Indiana.

3-IMG_0973

Michigan! For you in New Zealand, these are typical highway scenes in this state.

23-IMG_249224-IMG_2493

Mr. Diligence has had some culture shock. He was only four when we moved to New Zealand, and hadn’t been back. He is marveling at the large vehicles, and the tall buildings we saw in Cincinnati, and the tall electric poles. We keep telling him, “Everything is bigger in America!” He also had a hard time adjusting to being on the other side of the road. I’m not having much trouble driving here, although I told Mom yesterday that her car likes to go the New Zealand speed limit, which is a bit higher than the speed limit here. We are loving being with our family and getting to know them again.

Correction—Back to Kaikoura

June 24, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

I’m sorry about the missing picture from the post about going to Kaikoura for the first time in a couple of months. I mentioned a broken shipping container, but forgot to add in the picture; that particular photo came from Mr. Diligence’s memory card and I got it from him later. So, here it is.

Back to Kaikoura!

June 15, 2017 by NZ Filbruns 2 Comments

The highway to Kaikoura was closed just before Easter, when we had two back-to-back cyclones. The cliffs that were already weakened from the earthquake did some more slipping, and a hillside that hadn’t moved before came down. We had about given up hope of getting to church in Kaikoura before leaving on our trip to America, so we were quite happy to learn that the road was to be opened for a week and a half over our last weekend in New Zealand! It was wonderful to get to see our friends there again, after missing 10 Sundays there.

We had to stop at a light near Barney’s Rock, which gave us a good look at a slip that happened during the earthquake in November.

01-IMG_2425

This hillside slipped more in April.

02-IMG_2426

During one of the cyclones, this hillside slipped so much more that the containers, which are filled with rocks, chained together, and bolted to the cliff, were being pushed out to sea. Five of the containers were unhooked and removed so they wouldn’t be lost.

03-IMG_2427

The new slip. They built a new one-lane road over the seabed for temporary traffic.

04-IMG_242905-IMG_243006-IMG_243107-IMG_2432

We were impressed with the size of the boulder that obviously hit this container. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in the way when it came down!

MacKintosh Beach

May 17, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

One Tuesday in April, our homeschool group went out to MacKintosh Beach, near Amberley, for a picnic and to explore after reading the stories the children wrote, which gives us our excuse for getting together. We had never been out there before, so we enjoyed the spectacular scenery. Even though it drizzled a bit, it was a fun afternoon!

Field Trip

April 13, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

One day last week, we had to take a friend to the airport early in the morning, so I decided to take a field trip. We don’t often decide to do something like that, but there was a special exhibit at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch that I wanted to take the children to. Air New Zealand was celebrating their 75th anniversary, so they had a huge exhibit of their history.

The first part of our adventure was finding a place to park. Esther was driving, practicing her skills in the city. She got to drive around the City Centre area for half an hour before we finally tried out a car park in the middle of Hagley Park and found empty spaces! Then, we had to walk quite a ways in the drizzle to the museum. We really didn’t mind the walk, though. It led through the Botanic Garden, which we hadn’t visited for over six years. It was so beautiful! I want to take time again, on a nice day, maybe in spring, to explore the gardens more. We stopped to admire this enormous macrocarpa tree. Left to right are Mr. Diligence, Mr. Inventor, Mr. Intellectual, Mr. Sweetie, Little Miss, Esther, and Mr. Imagination.05-IMG_2153

The flower beds were stunning!

06-IMG_215407-IMG_2155

On the way to the airplane exhibit, Mr. Imagination and I got separated from the rest, because he was asking questions about some of the other exhibits. I let him take time to ride the horse in the Christchurch street area.

08-IMG_2156

This spot allowed you to decorate your own airplane. The boys spent a lot of time here. You could email your finished design to yourself; they turned it into a model you can print, cut out, and put together. We only ended up doing that with one, though, Mr. Sweetie’s.

09-IMG_2158

2-IMG_0916

When we left the museum, someone pointed out that the downspouts were decorative! I love late 1800s-early 1900s architecture.

10-IMG_2159

Mr. Diligence made his model plane on a rainy day several days before our field trip; Mr. Sweetie is holding the model he made from his design at the museum.

Orana Park

April 10, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

We have been going to Christchurch every six weeks or so for the past year and a half, for Mr. Inventor’s orthodontist appointments. Of course, these are always on weekdays, so I just take the children unless Gayle takes a day off work. The most recent one, however, was on a Saturday because the orthodontist was planning to take a few weeks off, so we made it a family trip. It happened to be Mr. Imagination’s 5th birthday, so we decided to celebrate by going to Orana Wildlife Park. What fun! It was a drizzly day, and chilly, so there weren’t as many people as usual, but the animals were more active for the most part, and we really enjoyed the day.

We enjoyed catching a glimpse of the American bison calf having a feed!

09-IMG_2101

It’s always fun to feed the giraffes.

10-IMG_2103

The birthday boy in front of a lion.

11-IMG_2105

People pay a lot for the privilege of riding in this truck while the lions are fed.

12-IMG_2110

We went back a second time to feed the giraffes.

13-IMG_211214-IMG_2114

The male rhino had apparently been taking a mud bath.

15-IMG_2120

We got up close to the rhinos after their feeding, too. Little  Miss had fallen down the steps at church the Sunday before this, and hit her forehead on the concrete.

16-IMG_2122

By the time we left, she was tired of being there and wanted to drag her feet on the road when she was in the stroller!

17-IMG_2123

And here are a few photos Mr. Diligence took of the animals.

Funny Boys!

March 15, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

The day we took family pictures, we also got individual pictures of the children. It was hard to get a good one of some of them. We finally managed it, though; you can see the best results on the sidebar to the right. In between, they had fun climbing this monument. There used to be an obelisk on the top, but it toppled in the November 14 earthquake. The boys took turns being a statue on top!

Family Picture Outtakes

March 6, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

After church yesterday, we asked a friend to help us get a family picture. What a mission! She said she enjoyed it; I hope she did! It turned out to be quite the adventure, trying to get nine people to all look at the camera at once, and look pleasant! We had a lot of trouble with lighting, since the sun was so bright. We did discover, last night long after we reached home, that there were little fingerprints on the lens, so that was part of the problem. Oops. Here are some of the failed attempts, with the final, best one, at the end (there were only 20 of them to sort through!). Thank you for your help, Kathryn!

Walk Around the Kaikoura Peninsula

February 20, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

We had visitors from America last week, so on Sunday after church we took them to the Peninsula and walked around from the carpark at Point Kean (the north side) at sea level to South Bay. Before the earthquake, we had to time such a walk carefully to coincide with low tide—no more. The tide was at least halfway in, maybe more, when we finished our walk, and we were still high and dry.

Starting out from Point Kean—not too different from before. When you look closely, though, there is no life in the cracks, as there used to be, and the rocks are dry and dusty.

11-IMG_1860

A seal, seagulls, and a shag.

12-IMG_186213-IMG_1863

Immature seagulls—we inadvertently walked through a nesting ground, although there were no eggs or tiny babies. The young are almost as big as their parents now.

14-IMG_1864

Climbing this rock—irresistible!

15-IMG_186716-IMG_186917-IMG_187018-IMG_187119-IMG_187220-IMG_1873

21-IMG_1876

There were a lot more rocks laying at the base of the cliffs than there were last time we did this walk. This one had split open with a very interesting pattern in it. Mr. Sweetie for scale!

22-IMG_1877

This erect-crested penguin is visiting Kaikoura at the moment. Normally, only very small Little Blue Penguins live there. What a treat!

23-IMG_1880

At the toilets at South Bay, the end of our walk. Mr. Inventor must have had sore feet! He walked all that way, over rocks of all shapes and sizes and sharpnesses, barefoot!

24-IMG_1883
