Christmas Day

December 28, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Christmas Day here is sure different from anything we ever experienced in Michigan! There, most years, we stayed holed up inside the house, with snow blowing outside. Here, most years, it’s warm—if not hot—and sunny, and we like to go to the beach! This year, we took a picnic lunch to Claverley, to a beach we went out onto for a few minutes, once, several years ago. It turns out to be a wonderful beach for the children to play at, at low tide anyway. The beach is covered with tiny gravel, all worn smooth. It’s a dark color, so really attracts the heat of the sun, which felt good in the chilly wind that was blowing. Above the high tide line, the gravel was too hot to walk on comfortably with bare feet, but below that line there was moisture just below the surface and it felt just right. There was an area of rocks going out into the sea at one spot, and it made a perfect place for children to splash and play, until the tide came up about halfway. We found a lovely pine grove to eat our picnic in. The thick layer of pine needles on the ground made a  lovely soft floor to sit on, and we were shaded from the bright sun. After lunch, we went and sat on the beach again for a couple of hours while the boys played in the water and then buried each other. It was a great day! On our way home, we picked cherries, but I never got any pictures of that.

Looking north; the area with all the kelp is where we spent the most time. You can faintly see the Kaikoura Peninsula sticking out from that point of land.

Looking south.

IMG_2646

As long as she wasn’t looking at the water, Little Miss was very happy. She loved playing in, and tasting, the gravel.

IMG_2648IMG_2651

Our picnic grove. Our nephew who is spending a few months in New Zealand was with us for the day.

IMG_2652

Mr. Inventor brought his boat along—half of a barrel! He sort of surfed with it.

IMG_2653

The boys had fun being buried by Daddy. This is Mr. Diligence, Mr. Imagination, and Mr. Sweetie.

IMG_2655

Little Miss helped bury Mr. Diligence, too.

IMG_2656

Mr. Sweetie wasn’t feeling the best that day. He stayed buried in the warm gravel for a long time.

IMG_2657

Esther was teasing Little Miss! The scared chuckling noises were pretty funny, as was the way she tried to climb higher on you.

IMG_2660

Mr. Sweetie decided he wanted to stay buried until the waves came up to him. We watched as the tide crept higher and higher…

IMG_2662

Mr. Inventor wanted to be buried sitting up. Daddy wore himself out burying so many sons in one day!

IMG_2663

The waves have finally come up far enough that Mr. Sweetie got wet. He jumped up and ran to safety.

IMG_2664

Check out Mr. Inventor’s expression!

Jellyfish

December 17, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

On a recent Sunday, our nephew, who is working for a few months at a farm an hour and a half from here, spent the day and went to church with us. After church, we went to the Kaikoura Peninsula. We walked across the top, enjoying a beautiful overcast day.

This seal pup was along the walkway, just as we started up the cliff.IMG_2452

The view from halfway to the top. This is the bay in front of Kaikoura, on the north side of the Peninsula.

IMG_2455

Walking along the the top of the peninsula. Little Miss was sound asleep when we arrived, so her daddy carried her till she woke up and wanted a snack. Then, I took her and Gayle went back to get the van and take it around to the end of the trail.

IMG_2458IMG_2460

See all the black specks on the white rocks? Those are seals.

IMG_2461IMG_2462IMG_2463IMG_2465IMG_2466

We made it to the overlook above South Bay! This is the other side of the headland on which you go back down to sea level.IMG_2468

And when we arrived at sea level, the boys who got there first had a surprise for us: They had found a jellyfish on the beach! In real life, the dark areas were somewhat bluer than this.

IMG_2470

Then, we moved on and found another jellyfish…and suddenly they were everywhere! Mr. Diligence counted 130 by the time we were done. Some were totally clear, like this one:

IMG_2472

And this one, with Mr. Inventor’s shoe for scale.

IMG_2475

This was the biggest we saw; it was more vividly brown.

IMG_2476

It’s hard to see them, but there are jellyfish scattered across the rocks and seaweed here, at the high tide line. Look for purplish, transparent blobs.

IMG_2477IMG_2479

After enjoying the jellyfish, I took Little  Miss onto the bridge that forms the end of the trail at South Bay. She loved looking through the bars.

IMG_2483

Mr. Diligence brought me this handful of sand, gravel and tiny shells.

Classic Cars, Snow, and Spoonbills

September 22, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Our trip to church Sunday was a little different from usual. Every year, this weekend, there is a classic car show in Kaikoura on Saturday, and the cars go back south on Sunday morning. There were around 600 cars at the show, we heard, and the boys counted 270 or so passing us! That sure adds interest to a one-hour trip we make nearly every week.IMG_2019IMG_2024IMG_2027IMG_2028

The other thing that made the trip unusual was snow. We drove through falling snow for about 10 minutes, and there was some slush on the road. That is the worst road conditions we’ve driven in in this country. It was sure pretty! This was the first and probably last snow for us this winter.IMG_2002

We especially noticed the wattle trees bending down with the weight of snow. On the way home in the afternoon, the snow was gone, but the wattle trees were still bowed down and a lot of limbs were broken off.

IMG_2003IMG_2005

On our way home, as we crossed a bridge just as the highway reached the sea, I looked at the river mouth and noticed a flock of spoonbills! We pulled off and Gayle and Mr. Intellectual went over to get a picture. The rest of us preferred to stay in the warm dry van.IMG_2041IMG_2043IMG_2046

Kaikoura

September 3, 2015 by NZ Filbruns 1 Comment

The last Sunday my sister-in-law was here, three weeks ago already, we took her to Kaikoura for church. After church, we took her out to the Peninsula, of course. It was a cold, windy day, but beautiful all the same. I stayed in the van with little ones who didn’t need to get cold, but most of the family climbed the Peninsula.

I have never seen so many seals at the Peninsula! They must have been wanting to stay out of the cold water.

DSCF0340IMG_1641

While I waited, I watched this film crew. I have no idea what the man was talking about, but they were obviously filming him discussing something! They had a reflector to bounce light onto him, and a shade they held over him at times to get the light right—until it blew away into the water and they had to scramble down to get it.

IMG_1646IMG_1649IMG_1659

We drove around to South Bay, on the other side of the Peninsula, and while there I noticed this incredible cloud formation. It was obviously snowing in the mountains!

IMG_1665

I enjoyed seeing these cows on such a steep hill. One had just raced downhill.

Farewell to Picton/Saltworks

August 31, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

We drove out to an overlook for one last view of the Sounds. It was gorgeous!IMG_1584IMG_1585

We saw the Bluebridge come in again. This picture is very washed out; it was actually a brilliant morning, but the sun was wrong for a picture.

IMG_1587

We also saw the Interislander come in again.

IMG_1599

We finally left Picton around 1:00 and headed toward home. When we got to Dominion Saltworks, a ways south of Blenheim, we drove around to see what we could see from the road. They let saltwater into huge shallow ponds here and let it evaporate, then clean the salt up somehow.IMG_1603IMG_1606IMG_1610IMG_1612IMG_1613IMG_1616

And here is a pretty church I saw beside the highway somewhere between Blenheim and Kaikoura.IMG_1619

We made it home by 6:00 that night—so good to sleep in our own beds again after a full week away from home!

This brings my travelogue to an end—now I can go back to normal posts! It has taken nearly a month to get all these posts up!

Kaiteriteri and Split Apple Rock

August 27, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

On Sunday we went to church with our friends, and then after a quick lunch went out to Split Apple Rock. We had been there with them a year ago, but wanted to show it to my sister-in-law. We didn’t see any penguins this time, but the rock was just as spectacular as the other time! The golden sand in Kaiteriteri is always impressive as well. The boys played on the flying fox (zipline in America) for awhile.

Little Miss was pretty tired by this point of our trip.

Pohara Beach

August 24, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

When the van battery went flat and our day was rearranged, we set out looking for a place for most of us to spend the afternoon while Gayle got the problem looked into. I wanted a beach with a picnic table and a toilet. We just took off from Takaka on a road going out to the sea, and when we got to the far side of Pohara we found just what we wanted! The beach was on one side of the road, and on the other, beside a tennis court, was a small parking area, a grassy spot with a picnic table, and the cutest toilet block I’ve seen in a long time!IMG_1506

After eating a quick lunch, Gayle and Mr. Handyman headed back to Takaka and the rest of us set off to explore the beach. Mr. Diligence, in the second picture down, had a set of “clam farms”. The boys had found some clams, and that gave him the idea. He found a set of streams of clear water coming out from under the cliffs, bubbling up from the sand, and worked to dam them up and direct the water to his farms. When he tasted the water, he was surprised to find it salty!IMG_0456DSCF9968

Wharariki Beach

August 22, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

The same day we walked on Farewell Spit and visited Cape Farewell, we also went to Wharariki (pronounced Farariki) Beach. Yes, it was about too much for one day, but as it turned out that was our only day to do all those things. Last time we were at Golden Bay, we wanted to visit this beach, but didn’t have time. This time, we made time, and it was sure worth visiting! The walk from the carpark to the beach was a lot more strenuous than I expected. I stayed in the van to feed the baby while the rest of the family went to the beach, and then I followed when she was done. It turned out that the “20 minute walk” was a fairly rugged kilometer or so, up and down hills, through a patch of trees, over several stiles, through an area of sand dunes, and finally across a long stretch of sand dunes to the sandy beach with rocky outcroppings in places!SANY0157DSCF9845

Farewell Spit

August 20, 2015 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Farewell Spit is a fascinating place to visit. The world’s longest sandbar, it stretches some 18 miles out into the Tasman Sea from the northern tip of the South Island. It is the breeding ground for many kinds of birds. Tourists are not allowed on very much of it; if I remember right you are only allowed to walk on the first 2.5 km or so from the base of the spit. We walked out there, across the spit to the outside beach, and back. Actually, Mr. Imagination, Little Miss and I didn’t get that far; we turned back after only a couple of km. The rest of the family did the whole track, though; it took them about 3 hours.

This is looking out along the spit from the base, where we started the walk. I found the ripples in the sand quite interesting. They are very firm. At high tide the water comes way up this beach, but quickly goes way out again as the tide goes down. SANY0139SANY0140

We found this jellyfish washed up. It was about as big in real life as it is on my screen here, about 2 inches in diameter.

Mr. Inventor dug these huhu grubs out from under a rotten log. He wanted to cook them and eat them, but finally decided he didn’t want to haul them around all day!

To Kaikoura With Grandma!

November 19, 2014 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

We are really enjoying having my mother with us for the month. All our adventures are more fun with a visitor! The first Sunday she was here, we went to Kaikoura for church, as usual.

The hills between here and Kaikoura are covered with broom, and it is in bloom right now.

We got to see a train when we were along the coast. Not much time to take that kind of picture—that’s why you see the reflection on the window!

After church we went to the Kaikoura Peninsula—lots to see there

Gayle turned over some rocks to find critters. Here were two starfish together—see the dark one?

The crab was hard to photograph, as it scuttled away quickly.

The sea was a gorgeous blue that day. The big plants are bull kelp; it grows in enormous beds all along our coastline.

After we left the Peninsula, we drove up the coast and stopped near the Oaro River. You can walk along the railroad tracks and enjoy a beautiful stretch of coastline. The big attraction for our boys is the wrecked train cars that were dumped along the sea at one point to prevent erosion! We ladies didn’t walk that far, though.

James, posing behind sweet peas with yellow lupines around.
