The Ahaura Bridge—Old and New!

July 11, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

When we moved to Ahuara three years ago, the only way out of the township to the south was by way of an old one-lane bridge. This bridge was also the most outstanding feature of our little village—if we were trying to describe where we lived to people, we would say, “The town with the long one-lane bridge!” Almost anyone who drove through here would remember it. We soon started hearing rumors, though, that we would be getting a new bridge sometime. It took another two years before work was started, but in January or February 2020, we saw the beginnings of a bridge just downstream from the old one. Lockdown slowed the work a bit, but by the end of this summer, it started looking possible that the new one would open soon! We first heard that it would open in April…then May. Weather delayed it some, and a rafting accident which took the life of a local man delayed it more. Finally, the date was set: the grand opening would be on the 12th of June! (Most of us drove over it a week and a half before that; because some paving had to be done on the approach on this side, traffic was diverted from the old bridge over the new one for a day, although we only used one lane.) A few of our boys decided they didn’t care about the opening, and went to town to get supplies for Simon’s house, but most of our family went. After the speeches in the township hall, the crowd of about 200 people walked down to the new bridge. The local school children sang a few songs in Maori,

17-IMG_0854

the Mayor (in the green coat) cut the ribbon with the biggest pair of scissors I’ve ever seen, and the first three vehicles ceremoniously drove across. (Two of the vehicles were school buses, with the children on board.)18-IMG_0856

Then, the bridge was opened for walkers. We enjoyed walking across and back on the roadway! There is a pedestrian lane on one side; we decided to walk on the other, since we’ll never be able to again!19-IMG_085820-IMG_0860

Looking downstream at the rail bridge.21-IMG_0864

Looking upstream at the old bridge. See the horse going across, about in the center? The woman who rides him said she often rode him across, but she won’t be going over the new bridge, with its two-way traffic. She took advantage of the last hour that the bridge was open. After we went home, the old bridge was closed and the new one opened. The last vehicle to cross the old bridge was driven by descendants of the woman who was the first to cross it when it was opened in 1929 (they won the bidding for the privilege!). We thoroughly enjoyed the chance to cross the new bridge on the day it opened, and we enjoyed the sunshine, too! Within an hour after we went home, the rain closed in again.22-IMG_0868

A few days before the new bridge opened, our children and some visitors ran across the old bridge. Esther had always wanted to cross it on foot, and this was the last chance. See the condition it was in? It needed either replacement or a lot of renovations. It’s a little sad to see a landmark disappear, though.

Timaru 2021!

June 13, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

We were very happy to be able to go to Easter Conference in Timaru this year, after it had to be canceled last year due to the Covid lockdown. This first set of pictures shows what the young people did on Saturday morning. Gayle went along, and they all walked to a lighthouse. I stayed behind to help prepare lunch and tidy the house for the evening’s gathering.

05-IMG_539806-IMG_5399

Of course, skipping stones was part of the fun. Having waves rolling in from two directions made it harder than in a river, though!07-IMG_540108-IMG_540209-IMG_540310-IMG_540411-IMG_540512-IMG_5406

They found an outboard motor washed up on the beach. Our boys carried it back to the vehicle, strapped it on the roof racks, and brought it home!13-IMG_5408

Sunday evening we had a sing to wrap up the weekend. One of the men there took these pictures of Miss Joy joining in the singing and sent this to me. She had turned the wooden box in which the songbooks are stored upside down, and used it as a seat. Little Miss is in front of her, on the left of the picture; to the right is a little girl her age; the two girls spent a lot of time playing together over the weekend.14-20210404_195359We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend in Timaru—two years is a long time between conferences! Thank you, friends from Timaru, for putting the conference on again.

4WD Excursion Up the Snowy River

May 30, 2021 by NZ Filbruns 1 Comment

Gayle, Esther, and all our boys went with a number of other people from our church on a drive along a rough track up the Snowy River. The road along this river comes out on the main road about 20 minutes’ drive north of us. They went up that road to the end, where they had morning tea at a farm, and then took the track a couple of kilometers into the bush to a former gold-mining area—the Alexander’s mine and gold stamping mill. Here is some of the scenery on the way to the farm.

01-IMG_545302-IMG_5454

Mr. Sweetie gesticulating about something at the farm. (Notice his new glasses, Grandma?) 03-IMG_5457

The center vehicle is Simon’s Pajero. The one in front is his boss’s Land Cruiser, affectionately known as the Troopie (because it’s a troop carrier). My family has been talking about the electric system for this farm ever since they got home. They generate their own power with a water turbine. The power is taken to the buildings with a single Number 8 wire, and most of the year they have to leave the lights on all the time so they don’t burn out the system, because they have too much power!04-IMG_5458

The first river crossing!05-IMG_5459

The Troopie has made it across; will the Pajero and the other Land Cruiser make it?06-IMG_5461

Simon hooking up a snatch strap so the Troopie can help him get up the muddy bank. He says the water was icy.07-IMG_5465

Checking out the ruts the Pajero made. The bank was apparently about three feet high before the Troopie went up it, and then the Pajero smashed it down some, too.08-IMG_546709-IMG_546910-IMG_5472

Eating lunch.11-IMG_5474

A tree was across the track—it’s a good thing someone had a chain saw along!

12-IMG_5477

The old stamping mill at the end of the track. They used to use some sort of cyanide treatment to extract the gold. Here is a video I took several years ago of a stamping mill that can still be used; it will give you a bit of an idea how they worked.

13-IMG_548114-IMG_548215-IMG_548416-IMG_5486

Back out at the road!17-IMG_5493

The vehicles emerged not much the worse for wear. The Troopie had no damage. The other Cruiser had some, and Simon lost a bit of trim from the sill under his door. They were pretty muddy when they got home, but that was the worst. Simon is hoping to do this kind of thing a bit more often, now that he has a vehicle for it.

Here is a video we put together from clips that Esther took of the river crossings:

A Day at the River

May 23, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Some friends from Dunedin came for a visit on a weekend in March. We took them down to the riverbed for a picnic. It was a perfect late-summer day, and the children enjoyed playing in the water, as usual.

IMG_5373IMG_5374IMG_5375IMG_5376IMG_5377IMG_5378IMG_5379IMG_5380IMG_5381IMG_5382IMG_5383IMG_5385IMG_5387

It was a wonderful day!

Antarctic Centre

May 9, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

In early March, we had the chance to go to the Antarctic Centre in Christchurch with the homeschool group we used to be part of. One of the moms from the group organized special rates for us. Gayle and I took the youngest five children and had a fun tour.

We started with a Hagglund ride. Miss Joy is too young to go on this ride, so Gayle took care of her while I went with the other children. About ten years ago when we went the other time, I stayed back from the Hagglund with the current baby, so this time I enjoyed getting to experience it.

IMG_1607

Here are two of the other Hagglunds. They are used for exploration in Antarctica, and can go over incredibly rough terrain. They are watertight and very strong!IMG_1608

This was one of the obstacles we went over on the 15-minute ride. It was a very steep hill.IMG_1615

This is the other Hagglund that took part of our group.IMG_1616

We drove over these logs. They are intended to represent broken-up sea ice.IMG_1618

This was another very steep hill, with large boulders in the water at the bottom. IMG_1621

The other Hagglund going through the water.IMG_1623

Just before we went into the 4D theater, Gayle had the children pose here. IMG_1630

This was the highlight of the day for some of the children—the cold room! It is kept below freezing, and then they started a storm. The wind whipped up, and the temperature stopped dropping. It got down to about 0°F for a few minutes. IMG_1636

Tramp to Elizabeth Hut

April 25, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

About the middle of February, Gayle and all five of the boys went on a tramp to Elizabeth Hut, in the mountains to the south of us, with several other men and children from our church. I stayed home with the girls, and with the help of a neighbor, did the milking. Mr. Diligence took his camera along and took these photos. Here they are getting ready to head out. Simon is in the center, and Mr. Sweetie and Mr. Imagination to the right in the photo.

IMG_1515

IMG_1519

They tramped up a river valley.IMG_1517IMG_1520IMG_1521

These little fish were found trapped in some puddles that were drying up.IMG_1527IMG_1532IMG_1533IMG_1536IMG_1538IMG_1545IMG_1547

This is a hot spring partway up to the hut. At some point in the past, someone made a concrete pool, but it’s in bad shape now.IMG_1550IMG_1557IMG_1561IMG_1562IMG_1563IMG_1565IMG_1566IMG_1569IMG_1572

Inside the hut! There are only six bunks, so the men got those and most of the young boys spread their sleeping bags on the floor.IMG_1575IMG_1581IMG_1582

They headed back the next morning. Soon after setting out on the 4-5 hour tramp, Simon twisted his ankle, and just kept going. He could hardly hobble by the time they got out, and didn’t walk on his foot again for a few days.IMG_1589IMG_1590IMG_1595IMG_1596IMG_1597IMG_1601IMG_1603

They all thoroughly enjoyed this tramp, and want to do it again!

January 2021 Photos

April 18, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

We had a lot of things going on in January after we got home! Gayle decided to paint the garage roof. He went over all the rusty places with a wire brush, and then painted them with something to stop the rust. He got two coats of paint put on all those places, and one coat on the rest.

IMG_7507IMG_7508

IMG_5284

Little Miss turned six in January! She was delighted to have a birthday! We had chocolate cake and lime ice cream for dessert.IMG_5285IMG_5286

Esther stripped our dining table and refinished it with teak oil. It’s pretty now!IMG_5287

We were given a deer! It was a huge red deer stag, and we got 39 kilos of meat off it. What a blessing!IMG_5288IMG_5291IMG_5292

Mr. Imagination put a bowlful of meat through the mincer.IMG_5294

Then, Simon took over and put a lot more through, faster!IMG_5298

The boys fried up some of the meat immediately, and pronounced it delicious!IMG_5301IMG_5303

Simon was doing exercises for awhile to strengthen his knees. One evening, he tried pushups with a load on his back!IMG_5304IMG_5305

Baby turkeys!IMG_5306

An apple tree at Simon’s house. I still haven’t gotten over there with a camera, and now the house is full of furniture, being stored till it’s needed by other people.IMG_5324

Esther took some friends to see the old dredge at Ngahere one rainy day.

IMG_5325IMG_5328

They also went down to our picnic spot by the river. Near the end of a week of torrential rains, this is what it looked like!IMG_5329

Later that week, also on a rainy day, we took some other friends to Shantytown, a historic village. We got to the school in between lessons on using old-style pens, but with the supplies laying out on the desks, we figured out how to use them.

IMG_7515IMG_5335IMG_5336IMG_5341

More exercises!IMG_5346IMG_7514

Elijah spent a few months building himself a desk (he finished it just when he quit school to start his apprenticeship!).

IMG_7527IMG_7528

This was our second picking of cucumbers. The next four weeks or so, I got twice this many each week.

IMG_7529

Our salad one evening. Mr. Imagination and Little Miss decorated it for us!

From Haast Pass to Home

March 31, 2021 by NZ Filbruns 1 Comment

On Day 12  of our big trip in December and January, we made it home! The trip was wonderful, we really enjoyed it, we saw amazing scenery and we spent time with many wonderful people—but it was time to get home. We packed up that morning in the DOC campground not too far from Haast Pass, on the West Coast side of the mountains, and then headed for the coast. It was clear and sunny that morning, and we enjoyed the amazing views of the mountains and rivers as we drove. Here we were, packing up the vans for the last time. We had put the fruit we brought on top of Simon’s van in case possums would come around during the night.  We  put  the  laundry  up  there,  too.300-IMG_5260301-IMG_5262302-IMG_5263303-IMG_5264304-IMG_5265

When we reached the coast, it got foggy for awhile. I think this is the mouth of the Haast River.305-IMG_5266

This is Bruce Bay, if I remember right.

306-IMG_5267

Another river—I don’t remember which one.

307-IMG_5268308-IMG_5269309-IMG_5270310-IMG_5273

We drove up to the carpark for Franz Joseph Glacier. We ate lunch there, in the vans, because it started pouring. We had talked about walking up to the glacier, but because it was raining so hard we viewed it from the carpark and left again.311-IMG_5275312-IMG_5276313-IMG_5279

It rained off and on till after we went through Hokitika—see the rain coming down in the distance? We made a stop for fuel, but otherwise just kept on driving, and in the end we were glad we hadn’t stopped anywhere, because it took long enough to get home as it was.314-IMG_5282

From Te Anau Over the Haast Pass

March 28, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

On Day 11 of our big trip, the second-to-last day, we left our friends’ house in Te Anau fairly early and started our two biggest days of travel on the entire trip. We first drove to Queenstown, which took a couple of hours. It poured for awhile, and was cloudy the rest of the day, but the scenery was still incredible.

269-IMG_7462270-IMG_5178

We drove along this lake for a long time. Queenstown is on the far end of it.270-IMG_5187

Notice the name on the brown sign? We were were going up the Devil’s Staircase here!270-IMG_5189

We stopped for a few minutes at a lookout. We would have stayed longer to enjoy the scenery, but a small person in the family had an emergency need, so we got moving again quickly.

270-IMG_7466271-IMG_5190271-IMG_5194271-IMG_5196271-IMG_5207272-IMG_7468

Almost to Queenstown!

274-IMG_7470

I think this is the other side of Queenstown, on our way to Cromwell.

275-IMG_7471276-IMG_5208276-IMG_5209276-IMG_7474277-IMG_7475

Cromwell is a fruit-growing center, so we stopped at a few shops to buy peaches, apricots, and plums. At one, we bought ice creams for the children. Can you tell that Miss Joy loves ice cream?278-IMG_5210

This place had incredible gardens we could wander through.278-IMG_20210107_124151

This lavender farm was right outside Cromwell.

278-IMG_5211

Mr. Imagination always kept Miss Joy happy when he rode beside her. They spent a lot of time playing with wet wipes. Miss Joy scrubbed her face, neck, hands and feet very thoroughly, over and over!278-IMG_7479279-IMG_7482280-IMG_7487281-IMG_5212

We stopped in Wanaka just long enough to fuel up the vans, and then headed across Haast Pass. We were no longer in the mood for any sightseeing!281-IMG_5213281-IMG_5214

Heading up into the mountains!281-IMG_7490

282-IMG_5219282-IMG_5220282-IMG_5222282-IMG_5223

After we crossed the pass and were again on the West Coast (notice the difference in vegetation?), we stopped at a waterfall. We saw this log covered with piles of rocks!282-IMG_7492283-IMG_5225283-IMG_7493

The boys enjoyed climbing on the rocks and skipping small ones.284-IMG_7494285-IMG_5229

The rocks were all like these.285-IMG_7495

We debated for awhile about driving the rest of the way home, or camping in a DOC campground a little way down the road. We had about five hours yet to reach home, and it was 3:00 in the afternoon. What a hard decision! We finally decided to stay at the campground and go home the next day, according to our original plan. At the campground, we discovered a creek along a track in the bush. I let the children play in it, and they had great fun! The older boys skipped stones, and coached the little boys in building a dam, and the girls played in the water. It wasn’t very warm, but not cold, either. We had enough clothes for the rest of the way home, so I decided not to worry about wet clothing—we had watertight tubs to put them in for the last leg of the trip!286-IMG_7496287-IMG_7500288-IMG_5232289-IMG_5234290-IMG_5239291-IMG_5246292-IMG_5247293-IMG_5248294-IMG_5249

This was our last night camping with the vans!295-IMG_5253

I cooked a stew on the campstove in the small picnic area, and we thoroughly enjoyed being by ourselves again!

296-IMG_5254297-IMG_5255

See how the beds were set up? It was surprisingly comfortable—and quite cozy!

298-IMG_5256

Esther took several short video clips of the fun at the creek—enjoy this glimpse into our evening!

Milford Sound—Part 3—The Trip Back

March 21, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

After we walked everywhere we could around Milford Sound, we gathered at the back of the vans to eat our sandwiches. It was raining, so some of us stood under the open back door; others got inside and sat in the seats. Wherever we were, the sandflies were BAD! They came in clouds, attacking every inch of exposed skin. We didn’t waste any time eating, and got on the road again quickly to escape the hungry hordes.

This is what we saw as we got on the road again. The mountains were absolutely spectacular, even through the rain.

250-IMG_7432

Here we were heading up to the Homer Tunnel again, from the seaward side. Again, there were sheer rock cliffs going straight up. It’s nearly impossible to get a feel for it from a photo. I was absolutely awestruck by these mountains.251-IMG_7438252a-IMG_5088252b-IMG_5089252c-IMG_5098252-IMG_7439

There’s the tunnel! I was quite disappointed that the light had just turned green. I was hoping we would have several minutes to sit there waiting, and soak in the grandeur of the scene. 253-IMG_7440

Have you noticed the water streaming down the rocks all around?254-IMG_7441

Going down the landward side.255a-IMG_5100255-IMG_7443

We stopped at a pulloff beside a waterfall. Miss Joy was asleep, so I stayed in the van with her while the others went to the viewing platform. This kea was on top of a motorhome; it rode for a little ways, and then flew back to our vans. 256-IMG_7445259-IMG_7449

Miss Joy didn’t sleep long, so I got out of the van and went to see the waterfall, too.260a-IMG_5101260c-IMG_5105260d-IMG_5109260-IMG_7450261-IMG_7452

When we moved on, the red van went ahead. Maybe I needed to feed Miss Joy? I can’t remember for sure. That left Esther and the two little girls and I together when we stopped at another overlook where we could see this spectacular valley. I can’t remember what it was called, but it was an amazing sight.262a-IMG_5113

Our next stop was the Cascade Creek Nature Walk at Lake Gunn. Miss Joy needed some time to play, so I stayed in the gray van with the two little girls while everyone else went on the walk. These are Esther’s pictures.262b-IMG_5114262c-IMG_5116262d-IMG_5118262e-IMG_5119262f-IMG_5120262g-IMG_5121We also stopped at Mirror Lakes. A nice boardwalk led along the edge of a beautiful pond.

262-IMG_7453263a-IMG_5124263b-IMG_5132263c-IMG_5133263-IMG_7455264-IMG_7457265a-IMG_5137265-IMG_7458266a-IMG_5134

We were trying to get a picture of all the children, and another tourist offered to take our family picture, so we quickly organized for this.266-IMG_7459

Then, we went back to work on the children’s picture.267a-IMG_5138

Miss Joy didn’t want to be separated from Mommy.267b-IMG_5141

Finally, Daddy had to help keep her in place while I took the picture.267c-IMG_5143

When we got back to Te Anau, we still had a few hours of daylight, so we stopped at the bird sanctuary. This is a takahe, a very rare bird. They have a couple of pairs there.267d-IMG_5147267d-IMG_5149

These are blue ducks, also very rare.267d-IMG_5159

Paradise ducks aren’t exactly rare, but we enjoyed watching them. The mother (the one closest to the camera) was very worried that we would hurt her babies, and kept trying to get us through the fence.267d-IMG_5161

This is a relative of the kea, some sort of a parrot, but I don’t remember what it’s called.267d-IMG_5164

This is another parrot.267d-IMG_5169267d-IMG_5171

A table and chairs just her size!267d-IMG_5173267e-IMG_5175

A little house for her, too!267e-IMG_20210106_174411

This is the view from our friends’ house. I would love to see it on a sunny day!267-IMG_7460268-IMG_7461Here is a video put together from several clips that various family members. The first clip was taken in the Eglinton Valley, on the way to Milford, by Mr. Imagination. Next is Esther’s clip of going through the Homer Tunnel, and then of going down the mountain from the tunnel. After that is a clip from sea level at Milford Sound, followed by one of the waterfall where we saw the kea. Then, there is one of Lake Gunn and a few from the nature walk.
