Jet Boat Race

November 3, 2018 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Thursday morning, a friend called to tell us that there was a jet boat race happening on the Grey River, and the boats would finish at the bridge over the Ahaura River just down the hill from us. She gave us the times they would be taking off on each of their three trips up and down the river, and sure enough, we soon heard the first round arriving. The second round started arriving shortly before lunch, so we took off down to the river to watch. We were a couple hundred meters past the finish line, so they were slowing down, but we enjoyed watching them shoot under the bridges and stop just upstream from us.

After all the boats had arrived here, we walked down stream to wait for them to take off again. When we reached the finish/start line, we learned that it would be another 20 minutes, so we went farther and found a good spot to settle down right at the water’s edge. It was a beautiful, sunny day, and the river bottom was so lovely, with bright yellow gorse and broom flowers all over. Yes, those shrubs are a terrible nuisance, but this time of year they are gorgeous!

Once the race started again, we enjoyed watching 19 boats go past. They left about a minute apart, and we could see the spray going up behind them for about 30-45 seconds, for maybe a mile around a couple of bends in the Grey River.

I tried to get a video to show the speed, and did get a few seconds—but then the batteries in my camera died.

Here are the few seconds of video I got.

Young Bicyclists

October 20, 2018 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Mr. Imagination wanted to build a car for himself. He ended up with a wooden contraption that his brothers helped him mount on a bicycle. It looks pretty funny, but he had a lot of fun with it for awhile! Little Miss has also ridden her bicycle a lot. This week, though, the training wheels broke off, so she can’t get herself going anymore. I got a video of her while she still could, though.

Skits for Grandma

September 29, 2018 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

A year ago, when we were in America, we helped celebrate my mom’s birthday. One of the things our children did was to perform four skits for the family. Their acting was not very polished, and at first they were pretty nervous, but some of the skits turned out fairly well. I had almost forgotten them, and then someone ran across the video we took of them on a memory card. So, I decided to share them here in case anyone is interested.

The first one is based on a story my dad used to tell. I told this story on my blog a few years ago, here.

The second is based on what one of the children thought he heard once, a number of years ago.

The third happened about a year and a half ago–and I still laugh to the point of tears when I watch this video.

And the last one needs a bit of explanation! My dad had a phobia of dentists, especially of getting a shot. He would say the needle they used was so big it took three nurses to carry it in.

Stamping Mill Video

April 24, 2018 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

When I wrote a post, about a month ago, about the day that we explored Reefton, I mentioned that I wanted to upload a video of the stamping mill we saw in action. I finally got it finished, so you can see and hear it working. I have added explanatory text, since it was too noisy to narrate.

Spinning Wheels

January 4, 2018 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Simon has been home for two weeks over the holidays, and we have really been enjoying having him here! There’s nothing like someone being away for awhile to make you thoroughly enjoy having him around again. He has been doing a number of construction projects, and having a lot of fun, too. One evening, he took an electric motor and fastened a round plate to it. Then, he used it to get a bicycle wheel spinning fast and tried to make it jump over various ramps. Esther got some video clips of this on her phone, and let me put them together into a short video to share here. (Enjoy, Grandma!)

Videos for Grandma

October 6, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Just for my mom, here are two videos of the little ones.

This first one is of Little Miss counting to 22 when she was playing hide and seek with Mr. Imagination.

This is Mr. Imagination reading me his list of words. He has only learned six sounds so far, but he’s doing quite well at sounding out words. In the background you can hear Little Miss and her incessant questions and comments!

Dead Boring Concert 2017

October 1, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Today was our homeschool group’s annual concert. As always, we enjoyed the musical pieces, recitations, songs, and skits performed by the other families, and also sang a couple of songs ourselves. Here are videos of us singing both of them.

Our first song was one we learned in our house church in Michigan, a very beautiful prayer.

Oh, Heavenly Father and merciful Lord,
We come to you now in one mind and accord.
We are so undeserving to make this request,
But with your sweet spirit Lord let us be blessed.

Chorus:
Open the windows and pour out a blessing,
Shower your power upon us O Lord;
Send such a blessing we cannot contain it,
Lord open the windows of heaven today.

So often we’ve witnessed your power so strong,
But yesterday’s blessings are all past and gone.
Once again we come needy as humbly we pray,
And that’s why we lift up our voices and say:

The second was Sing Hallelujah to the Lord, which has so much repetition that I’m not going to include the lyrics.

And, for those who don’t understand the title of this post, it is not a boring group at all. Dead Boring is the name of the group, and has been for some 20-25 years. The mother who started the group told her son that she was starting a writing group, and he responded, “Oh, that’ll be dead boring.” She said, “Yes, it will!” and the name was born.

School Days

September 19, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

We spend a lot of time at the kitchen table in the mornings, doing lessons.

The day Mr. Sweetie learned about borrowing when subtracting, we got out the Base 10 blocks to illustrate what was happening. As soon as I was done with them, Mr. Imagination and Little Miss started playing with them—no wonder I sometimes have trouble finding all the pieces I need!

Mr. Intellectual loves building towers with the blocks, then taking a video of the tower collapsing.

Mr. Diligence is required to spend some time reading something—whatever he wants to—every morning. He’s been reading the Circle C books lately, and really enjoying them. He read the entire Circle C Beginnings series, and now he’s reading the two Circle C Steppingstones books that have been published.

Mr. Imagination isn’t officially doing school yet. He’s quite capable, but he doesn’t want to most of the time. He’s just 5, so I’m not pushing yet—but some days he does things like this! He wrote the numbers to 28, just for fun.

29-IMG_3263

Little Miss spent a lot of time one morning sorting this tiny animals by color. Sometimes she sorts them by kind of animal, or just stands them up. They came inside a Mancala game someone bought at a secondhand shop, and they have been played with a lot more than the game!

Video–The Great Water Trick

June 27, 2017 by NZ Filbruns 1 Comment

It’s been a few years since our children have made a movie, but they’ve been planning one for about three years. They finally figured out how to do it, and got it made in February. Somehow, I forgot to post it then, so here you go. I love this one!

Video–Happy Hill Farm

June 18, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

This is a video Esther made many years ago, before we moved to New Zealand. She did a short tour of our farm, plus some fun bits of her brothers playing. This is quite a keepsake to us; we love to watch it every so often.
