October 2017 Pictures

November 4, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Here are the rest of the pictures from October!

It’s hard to see in this picture, but one thing they’ve done to stabilize this cliff face is to put black netting over the loose rocks. You can see it on the left side of the top.

01-IMG_3437

These are five-ton blocks of concrete—and a slip pushed them over!

02-IMG_3441

Mr. Intellectual is doing a course called “Thinking Like an Engineer.” He’s loving it, especially the experiments. In this one, he had to pile books an inch above the floor, using one sheet of printer paper. You’ll have to wait till I write the review of the course to see how tall a stack he achieved!

03-IMG_3412

Mr. Sweetie built this stack of animals, and then took 16 pictures of it!

03-IMG_3455

This was the latest dump find. Mr. Intellectual is loving his “new” roll-top desk!

06-IMG_3460

We got out the microscope one day to look at some algae. It was still out several days later when I was cutting up meat, so we looked at that, too.

07-IMG_3420

The first picture is skeletal muscle; the second is cardiac muscle. Mr. Intellectual had just been studying about these muscles a few days before, so this was a timely opportunity.

11-IMG_342612-IMG_3427

Mr. Imagination and Little Miss spend most of the morning playing together while the bigger boys do school. They got out the rocking horse one day and had great fun on it for a long time.

07-IMG_3464

Little Miss can spend hours playing with these tiny animals. She loves sorting them.

09-IMG_3422

One day, Little Miss wanted to paint, so I gave her a brush and a bucket of water and told her to paint the house.

10-IMG_3425

Mr. Imagination was delivering quite a fiery sermon to his brother and sister! I enjoyed listening, while I picked lettuce nearby and pretended not to pay attention.

September 2017 photos

October 25, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Here are the last few photos from September, that didn’t fit into any other posts.

When everyone else works on cleaning the house on Saturdays, Little Miss wants to do her cleaning, too. She has decided that spraying the walls and scrubbing them is her job. She sure loves to spray water!

02-IMG_3299

Licking the beaters is the best part of making pavlova!

05-IMG_331106-IMG_3312

The boys brought in four goose eggs one day. They decided to blow out the insides and paint the shells.14-IMG_3327

Mr. Imagination did this one.

16-IMG_3330

Esther made herself a new dress, and used the leftover fabric to sew an apron for her little sister.

17-IMG_3335

Princess doing what she does best.

23-IMG_3344

On our way to the Dead Boring concert a few weeks ago, we got to see the Weka Pass train—it’s just a short excursion train from Waipara to Waikari. Fun to see a steam engine!

August 2017 Pictures

September 22, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

The kitchen table broke one day, so Simon and Mr. Diligence fixed it for us. I’m sure glad Mr. Diligence has learned to fix things, too, since Simon is no longer here!

17-IMG_3247

Princess likes to try out all sorts of new places to sleep in.

18-IMG_3248

She also wants in the house all the time. She can walk along the ledge outside the living room window, and she begs to come in that way.

20-IMG_3250

Her favorite place to spend the day is on top of our refrigerator in the laundry room. One day, she was rolling around trying to get attention from the boys and fell off!

25-IMG_3258

Mr. Imagination making toast for his breakfast on top the stove.

26-IMG_3259

Little Miss showing off her ponytails.

27-IMG_3260

A dear friend sent these flowers to me! I was bringing the cow home one evening when a truck turned onto our road. I kept the cow off the road, and wasn’t paying much attention to the truck, but it went slower and slower so I finally looked. The driver, a man who had been a neighbor at one house we lived in, was holding out these flowers to me! So beautiful. Thank you, dear friend!

30-IMG_3264

One Sunday at church, a girl who loves Little Miss decorated her with these pansies, so I asked the girl if she would take some pictures for me.

38-IMG_328339-IMG_328640-IMG_3287

These are places we frequently find the cats. Bandit wants a soft, warm spot. Princess wants to be on something, and the computer, when it’s open, is a favorite. If I close it she’ll find some other place. She loves to curl up on a sheet of paper!

41-IMG_3293

Our beef cattle. The two black ones will soon be going to the works. The white one was our calf last year.

Back Home Again!

September 7, 2017 by NZ Filbruns 3 Comments

Yes, I know we’ve been home in New Zealand for around six weeks now. It has taken me awhile to get caught up on posting on here. I like to keep things in chronological order, because that’s just the way I am, so here we go.

This was our first evening home. We landed in Christchurch around 9:30 am, so got home around noon. We unloaded the van and I cooked lunch; in the afternoon I unpacked all the suitcases and plastic totes we had packed with books, fabric, and other treasures we brought home. We sure enjoyed the warmth of the house; a friend had come early that morning and started both fires for us. It was quite chilly outside, since it was still midwinter. We were used to the heat of midsummer in Ohio, of course, so the warm house was especially welcome. By evening, what with the difficulty sleeping sitting up on the airplane the night before, and the eight-hour time difference between the Eastern time zone of the United States and our time here, these boys fell asleep waiting for supper to be ready. We tried to wake them up to eat, but finally gave up and carried the two younger ones to bed. Mr. Diligence stayed all night on the couch. Little Miss wasn’t asleep, but she was imitating her brothers!

IMG_3187

A couple of mornings after we got home, we were treated to a visit from this pair of Paradise Ducks in our yard!

IMG_3189

Our first Sunday home, we went to church in Kaikoura, enjoying thoroughly the beautiful mountains. Some us us found out how much we had missed the mountains and the sea while we were gone!

IMG_3194IMG_3196IMG_3199IMG_3200

Little Miss was delighted to finally get to wear this dress, which a great-aunt had given her. Because of the long sleeves, I saved it to wear here, where it’s colder, rather than in Ohio where it was so hot.

IMG_3201

The cats were happy to be home. We picked them up on our way home from the airport, and they obviously remembered this place. We wondered if they would run away, but they were happy here right away. Esther was amused when she saw this scene one afternoon.

01-IMG_3204

This was our second Sunday home; we went to Waikari for church. It poured for a couple of hours, but the skies started to clear as we left, and then we saw this brilliant double rainbow!

02-IMG_3212

Looking back the other direction, this is what we saw.

03-IMG_321404-IMG_3215

We greatly enjoyed our trip to America, but there is no place like home, and no place like New Zealand!

May 2017

June 11, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

And the rest of the pictures from May! This is a fairly common sight in the morning; here Mr. Inventor is doing his typing lesson while his cat keeps him company, and Mr. Sweetie is trying to get himself started on his Math in a cozy spot in front of the fire.01-IMG_2292

After a heavy rain, the underground cistern overflowed, so Mr. Imagination and Little Miss had great fun playing in the puddle one morning. Great fun, that is, until she got muddy—see the picture below! Then, she was done. Because the cistern was overflowing, and we had no need for the water, I let the boys pump it out to the duck pond. They forgot to turn the pump off at bedtime, though, and Esther discovered it sucking air the next afternoon when we were away! Oops. It’s refilled now, though. Quite a contrast to a few months ago, when we were saving water in every way we could. We’re so thankful for rain!

04-IMG_229805-IMG_229906-IMG_2305

Mr. Sweetie was playing with a candle one day. The wick was long enough he was able to get it to curl around like this, and he wanted to take a picture of it.

08-IMG_2326

On chilly days, the fire is a main focal point.

13-IMG_2337

I’m not sure what these two were up to. They made a line of the Childcraft books along the hallway. And the blankets wrapped around them? I don’t have a clue!

April 2017 Pictures

May 30, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Time to get caught up with the random pictures!

Remember that post I did about salsa? After I added all the other ingredients, I ended up with two pots full!

34-IMG_22634-IMG_2288

Does Little Miss look like she has gained some weight? We were given a big boxful of shoes, gumboots, and a few dresses, her size or a little smaller. She wanted to wear all the dresses at once, so she has five dresses on in this picture!

33-IMG_2261

One afternoon when everyone was away except her and me, she found this sunflower head and sat herself down to pick the seeds out. She got a handful before she got tired of it.

31-IMG_2259

Yes, this is me laughing. I had sent a text to Gayle at work, and although he got an advertising text sent him just before that, he didn’t see mine. So, I sent him another, and we were all laughing about the ridiculousness of the whole thing.

30-IMG_2256

Gayle reading my text.

29-IMG_2255

One of our favorite meals—straw hats.

26-IMG_2244

What to do with an empty chips bag—tape it shut tightly, then pop it with a bang! Boys….

25-IMG_2242

We didn’t have a hard frost till early May, but I picked all the peppers the end of April. These were all from the greenhouse. I was astounded; I hadn’t thought they did so well this year!

5-IMG_2290

This silly cat is always looking for a new spot to sleep.

3-IMG_2284

I’m fixing my bicycle!

2-IMG_2283

Gayle took the boys to the beach to get some sand, so the sandbox is full again. It’s been quite popular—although I’m glad the main popularity only lasted a couple of days; a lot was tracked into the house during those days.

Happy Days

May 7, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

This is just a collection of random pictures of happy times over the past couple of months—pictures I never found a spot for before. Mr. Imagination was so happy to have puddles to splash in! This was one of our first rains in March, and was some of the first puddles he had the opportunity to play in for a couple of years. 07-20170313_113735

All these lovely people, plus a few more, slept and ate at our house for a day and a half! We really enjoyed that weekend. One family had lived with us for two and a half months; they had to fly back to America a couple of days after the picture was taken, and the other family had come to say goodbye to them.

19-IMG_2128

Mr. Intellectual was doing a science experiment, with help from Mr. Inventor and Esther. It had something to do with how pulleys work.

20-IMG_2131

A friend came one day to say goodbye before she goes to America for a year. She loves children, and spent a lot of the day with the little ones. You can see how Little Miss loved her!01-IMG_2145

I believe this is a cup of hot chocolate from the friend in the picture above. Think Little Miss likes it?

03-IMG_215004-IMG_2151

We were given a big box of clothes, and Mr. Inventor had great fun dressing up and trying to look as ridiculous as possible! (And now I notice a cat enjoying the box!)

13-IMG_2170

I came out of the bedroom after praying with Gayle at bedtime one night, and found that, not only had the boys not gone to bed, Mr. Inventor was busy tying Mr. Diligence up!

17-IMG_2179

When we happen to have a Sunday afternoon at home, Daddy sometimes plays a game with the children. They love it!

Children—March 2017

April 1, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

I’m not sure what her problem was, but she sure thought it was terrible!03-IMG_2049

I dehydrated some strips of zucchini one day. When I brought the dehydrator in that evening to empty it, the children started eating them—and didn’t stop till they had eaten about half of them!

04-IMG_2051

One afternoon, the hot water heater was boiling, after the fire had been burning most of the day. I said that the little boys ought to have their bath. Later, I went looking for Mr. Imagination, and this is what I found! Obviously, he didn’t catch what I really intended. Of course, Little Miss soon let go of her dress and was soaking. They had fun for awhile.

05-IMG_2052

It rained! The creek had some water in it, and the little children had a lot of fun for a few days. What a mess!

08-IMG_2083

Mr. Inventor’s latest project. An old brother in our church died a little over a year ago, and Mr. Inventor recently asked his widow if he could buy the man’s three old motorbikes. None of them are working, although the motors will turn over on two of them. He’s hoping to put together one that works. They had to dig them out from under several year’s worth of grass and thistles, to load them on the trailer. I managed to grab this shot of the boys riding on them up to the house before we left to bring them home from Kaikoura. All five boys are on board; Mr. Sweetie’s head is just visible behind Mr. Intellectual’s shoulder. There wasn’t time for a better picture before they disembarked.

09-IMG_2086

Mr. Diligence doing school while Princess naps. That cat sleeps in the funniest poses! I have several more pictures for another post.

12-IMG_2092

Mr. Imagination was given a huge teddy bear at a secondhand shop we went to on his birthday. Little Miss loved it, so when a friend at whose house we were a few days ago mentioned that she was sending some teddy bears to the op shop, I said Little Miss would like one. Did she want the bears, though? No—she fell in love with this penguin!

Random Pictures from February and March, 2017

March 23, 2017 by NZ Filbruns 4 Comments

I often end up with an assortment of pictures that don’t seem to fit any theme, so here they are.

We see this rock wall every time we go to Kaikoura now. These rocks were stacked up to try to keep new rocks and dirt off the road if the slip slips again. I always think someone with a huge piece of equipment must have had fun stacking them up!30-IMG_1896

One of the boys found this cicada that died halfway out of the shell! They were quite intrigued with it.

01-IMG_191102-IMG_1916

We’re doing Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Astronomy this year for science. An assignment for the first chapter was to make a model of the solar system with balloons. From right to left are Mercury (black), Venus (orange), Earth (blue), Mars (red), Jupiter (orange), Saturn (pink with a green ring), Uranus (blue), and Neptune (purple). The yellow one represents the sun, although it would have had to be the size of half of our house. Jupiter and Saturn should have been twice as big as they are, but the balloons kept popping when we tried to get them bigger. And apparently, Pluto is no longer considered a planet! Even though this is quite out of scale, we had fun doing it.

03-IMG_1946

I made tiny ponytails in Little Miss’s hair one day, just for fun. I think it will be awhile yet before we need to do any such thing again!

08-IMG_1959

Our onion harvest this year.

02-IMG_2043

We took the Inland Road to Kaikoura one Sunday when the coastal highway was closed due to slips from rain and fresh earthquakes. This is a church in Waiau, which was badly damaged in the November 14 quake. The bell tower is leaning pretty badly, although it’s hard to see in this photo.

06-IMG_2057

One evening at the table, we were discussing how old each of us would be in Mercury years (Mercury goes around the sun four times for every Earth year). Someone got out our new abacus to figure out his daddy’s age. Multiplication is challenging with the abacus! We finally worked out how to get the answer, but it took awhile.

10-IMG_2089

Mr. Intellectual drew this picture of a volcano, presumably in Hawaii, erupting into the ocean.

Children and Kittens—February 2017

March 8, 2017 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

One day when I was hanging out laundry, Little Miss found this headdress that her daddy wears at work to cover his hair and beard. She thought it was great fun to try on!02-IMG_183603-IMG_1837

Little Miss wanted me to take a picture of Princess’s feet!

04-IMG_1844

Bandit going out the living room window.

05-IMG_1848

What fun! A box with a hole in the side!

06-IMG_1850

Mr. Inventor bringing the little ones in for dinner.

07-IMG_1853

One cool morning I lit the fire in the coal range. Princess spent a lot of the morning on this stool in front of it, soaking in the heat.

10-IMG_1858

Little Miss was excited one morning to find a kitten asleep in the dirty laundry pile. She covered the kitten up, so I carefully picked up the pile of laundry and put it in a basket so no one would step on the invisible kitten. Then, both of them ended up in the soft “bed”.

29-IMG_1892

Little Miss is playing with dolls more and more. Here, she was carefully covering up her baby’s toes. When I put her in bed at night, and she has a teddy bear with her, she wants me to cover its feet, too!

03-IMG_1924

Mr. Inventor’s latest project: a recumbent bike. It’s still in the process of being made, but he rides it around a lot.04-IMG_1932

08-IMG_1940

Trying to sync the front wheels so steering is easier, and fix the chain.
