Lake Hanlon and Home

Our week at Karamea was soon over and we needed to pack up and go home. The lady who, with her husband, runs the campground, stopped by as we were preparing to leave and we asked her about a good place to stop and have one more short walk on our way south. She recommended Lake Hanlon, about a half hour drive from Karamea, so we stopped there and walked the track over and around a hill, and down to a small lake. Such a beautiful spot! Here are a few photos and a video I took.

This enormous rock sits in a paddock near Granity. It doesn’t look so impressive in the picture, but in real life it does. It’s the size of a house!

This is the T Rex tree in the Buller Gorge. Apparently it’s labeled on Google Earth, although I haven’t tried to confirm that.

25 Years! (Part 2)

I shared a few pictures last week of our anniversary getaway. The next morning, we tried to find some rock pools that Gayle had explored with a friend while doing supervision when this friend had his children on a visit, but the tide was too high, so we gave up. We drove towards Westport, and stopped at Tauranga Bay. We walked up the Cape Foulwind walkway, and enjoyed seeing the sights along the first part of it.

This is Wall Island, where several different species of sea birds nest. It is one of the few predator-free places in New Zealand.

Next, we came to the overlook above the seal colony. There were just a few mothers and pups hauled out. One pup was very active, moving around from place to place.

This rock was just offshore from the seal colony. We saw waves breaking over it!

This was a fun place to take a picture!

There is Cape Foulwind in the distance. A rain squall was on its way, so we turned around and walked quickly back to the car. We drove around to the other end of the walkway, but it was raining so we decided not to walk any more.

We went on to Westport, and drove out to the Tip Head, the end of the breakwall on the north side of the Buller River mouth. Then, we went back to the beginning of the breakwall and doubled back, going out to the beach again. We found this beautiful little garden, in memory of someone.

This beautiful picnic area was next to it, and there were wild cherry trees all around.

It was raining, and the Whitebait Festival was happening, so Westport was crawling with people. We decided to head home. I got these next two pictures while we drove through the Buller Gorge.

We ended up buying our lunch at the supermarket in Reefton and having a picnic, then walking around the Powerhouse walk because the sun had come out. It was a wonderful time away–I think we should do it more often!

Quick Trip to Blenheim

A dear friend of ours died the end of November, so a few days later we went to Blenheim for his funeral. It’s a four-hour trip, but because of work and cows, we decided to make it there and back in one day. It meant leaving early in the morning, eating breakfast on the road, and getting home late in the evening, but we did it. It was well worth going. The man who died was the first person we met when we moved to New Zealand 11 years ago (almost to the day of the funeral!), and he and his wife had virtually adopted us. We spent a lot of time with them the first five years we lived in Cheviot, until they moved to be nearer their family. He loved the Lord, and was ready to go, so although we’ll miss him greatly, the day carried an undertone of rejoicing that was wonderful to experience.

I was intrigued by the huge vineyards around Blenheim. While I wish the fruit orchards they replaced were still there, because I like fruit much more than wine, it was fascinating to see the long rows of vines and the enormous wineries.

This view up a riverbed was gorgeous, too.

On our way home, going through the Buller Gorge, we had to stop because someone was carsick. These flowers were beside the road there.

Gayle took a few of the children on a very short walk to the edge of the cliff going down to the river, and when they got back, Mr. Diligence, who was stuck in the van because of his injured knee, took a few pictures. Miss Joy had found a few little rocks, which she clutched in her fist, saying, “Ock! Ock! Ock!”

Buller Gorge and Pancake Rocks

The Sunday after Christmas, we went to church in Reefton. We had a friend with us, a young woman whose family we spend a lot of time with. She had never been to Pancake Rocks, so we decided to take her there. Since we were in Reefton, we drove to the coast via the Buller Gorge, which she had also never been through. We hadn’t been through there in several years, either, so it was fun to see that beautiful place again.

There is some farmland along the Buller, where the valley widens out enough. The colors were so vivid that day!

This place is always fun to see, where a single lane has been carved out of the highway. It may be hard to believe, looking at this picture, but about a month or a month and a half ago, when we had a lot of rain, the level of the water was up to the road there at the cut-out! I saw a picture online of the floodwaters swirling around the guardrail.

We stopped at a roadside picnic table to eat lunch, and went down to the river. See how the grass is laid over, way above the level of the water? That’s where the water was, when the river was in flood!

There was a small, beautiful creek there.

When we reached Westport, we turned south and drove along the coast. This was the first time I’ve ever seen the mountains along this route; the other times we went through there, they were covered in clouds.

There was no action in the blowholes at Pancake Rocks, since the sea was so calm. We got some good family pictures, though! Here I am with my beautiful daughters.
