Out and About in Ohio

September 28, 2025 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

On a few days while we were in Ohio, we drove around visiting various people. On one of those days we stopped at the cemetery where Gayle’s mother is buried and visited the spot. After taking a serious picture, the children got goofy!

We stopped to have a look at this old house and barn, built by one of Gayle’s great-great-something great-grandparents. Can you see the date at the lower right corner of the house? The date on the barn is 1901.

I took this next picture because of the juxtaposition of the old wooden shingles on the shed, with the modern building just beyond.

This is another family house; it is the one Gayle’s mother grew up in. It was brick then, but has been updated more recently. One of his cousins lives in it with his family.

We also visited our nephew’s farm. He raises meat chickens in these structures, and moves them every day.

He also moves his cattle and sheep daily.

Miss Joy was delighted to find a cat she could love on. She badly missed her cats.

Of course, we went swimming again. Miss Joy is quite the fish; she can swim well with a life jacket on.

We visited another nephew, and toured the house he has restored for his young family.

Columbus Zoo

September 21, 2025 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

While we were in Ohio, we took a day to go to the Columbus Zoo. My brother, who lives in Ohio, and his family have a year pass, so we went together. There are no elephants in New Zealand, so the children badly wanted to see one.

While we waited for my brother’s family to arrive, we took a few pictures. They were setting up for the Lantern Festival, so there were cloth sculptures like this all over the zoo (picture below of one of them).

Our first stop was the sea lion exhibit–and the first thing we saw there was this diver cleaning the cage!

The sea lions swim around, over and under a glass tunnel that we walked through. We enjoyed watching them.

There was a glass underwater viewing area for the polar bears, too.

Reindeer

Wolverine

Hyenas

Finally, the elephants! This one was playing with a stick, putting it in her mouth and crunching it. A young one was throwing sand all over itself. The big male was in an enclosure by itself, and we watched it eating hay from a large net bag, very carefully pulling some out and putting it into its mouth.

When we walked up to the flamingoes, the entire flock raced over to us, honking loudly. I had never imagined that they sound so much like geese!

Miss Joy had ben asking if we would see an alligator. She was enthralled, and spent several minutes studying it.

The children’s aunt bought tickets for them to ride the carousel.

We enjoyed watching the gorillas eat their meal. The baby was really cute!

There was a baby orangutan, too.

I had never seen a koala before!

More Time in Ohio

September 14, 2025 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

For our first weekend in Ohio, Gayle’s family all came together. On the Saturday morning, a lot of us drove to Dayton to the 2nd Street Market to have a look at it. When we parked, this colorful grain elevator caught my eye.

The first booth we came to was one of the most interesting, with a woman from Kenya selling baskets and other woven products from all over Africa.

Our nephew has a stall, where he sells grassfed meat.

The children enjoyed swimming in a neighbor’s pond several times.

One of those afternoons, the girls were at one pond while a sister-in-law and I took the boys to another pond.

Mr. Imagination was in his element!

That same day, the men worked on power-washing two houses.

One evening we took pictures. Our family felt pretty little!

On a very hot afternoon, Miss Joy spent a long time wetting the feet of one of her aunts, who loved the feel of cold water on her feet.

There was a beautiful sunset that night.

The girls got to wear their new pink dresses for the first time.

Because of the heat, all the children ended up moving into our bedroom and sleeping on the floor–we had an air conditioner!

A few times I walked with the children from my sister-in-law’s house, where we gathered, to my father-in-law’s house. I took this picture on of those times, of the house where Gayle grew up. It’s somewhat obscured by the trees, just past the barns.

We were walking across the lawn one day, on our way to visit someone, when we noticed this wasp dragging a katydid to a hole. How fun to see something like that! When we came back a couple of hours later, the hole was so well hidden we couldn’t figure out where it was.

The children’s aunt organized a campout one evening for Mr. Imagination and two of his cousins. We all joined them for a cookout by the creek.

One of the children found this butterfly on a nearby tree.

The two cousins brought their guns, and the boys all went hunting that evening. They got a few birds, but no raccoons. Here they are sighting the guns in.

Miss Joy loved playing on her aunt’s stairs. The fun thing about that is that the house used to belong to Gayle’s grandmother, and all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren did the same thing! Miss Joy made up quite the games with the stairs and bannister.

Travel, First Few Days in Ohio

September 7, 2025 by NZ Filbruns 2 Comments

We’re home from our trip to America! I’ll share a few of the pictures we took while there, but I can’t share most of them because they include people who aren’t in our immediate family.

We had a beautiful trip over the mountains to get to Christchurch to the airport. The morning was frosty and clear, which promises a gorgeous day. We made a brief stop at an overlook with a view of the Otira Viaduct, built about 25 years ago to get the highway off a very dangerous part of the mountainside. We also stopped in Moana where Simon works, to say goodbye to him and to see the workshop.

Our first flight, from Christchurch to Auckland, was only about an hour long. Miss Joy had never flown before, and she was delighted to have a window seat. I let her borrow my phone, and she took a lot of pictures out the window. The Kaikoura Peninsula is visible in this one.

Both the long flight, from Auckland to Houston, and the last one, from Houston to Cincinnati, went smoothly. We won’t talk about the shock to our systems to land in 94*F Houston, with high humidity, or the three very long lines we had to wait in there to get to our gate. We were relieved to reach the end of our journey in the wee hours of the morning!

Mr. Imagination loved trapping kittens for his grandfather. These kittens are fed daily, but are quite wild. They like to get into the garage and make a mess, though.

The girls enjoyed playing with a tea set their aunt had for them.

A bat was discovered inside a house we spent a lot of time in. The owner of the house was aghast, but Mr. Imagination said he thought it was cute and wanted one for a pet! He enjoyed helping get it out of the house at dusk, though.

He also enjoyed riding the pedal cart his grandfather built years ago.

The children all loved playing in their aunt’s creek. They were fascinated with the raccoon tracks, since we don’t have coons.

They also found these structures by the creek, and Mr. Imagination caught a minnow.

June 2025 Photos

July 27, 2025 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Here are the rest of June’s pictures! We often see beautiful rainbows toward the south, out our living room window.

One day when we were in town, we ate a picnic lunch at the breakwall. This bird was flying up the river, then swiftly riding the wind back out to sea. I thought at first it was an albatross, but a week or two later we went out to the breakwall on the other side of the Grey River mouth and saw the sign below. I’m guessing that it was a Petrel, instead. It certainly had a different way of flying than the seagulls that flocked around!

This was the view across the river mouth on the second day.

The cows spent a day in the empty section in front of us just before work began on a new house there, and Miss Joy enjoyed watching and photographing them. This won’t happen again; the new owners have moved a caravan in and are living on the section.

Miss Joy

Mr. Imagination has been making a lot of knives; lately, he’s been working on learning how to harden the saw blade steel he uses. He is doing it in the fire in our lounge, and then quenching the blade in oil. The only problem with that? People often kick the oil accidentally.

Through the Mountains

July 20, 2025 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

One weekend in June, we traveled to the other side of the mountains for some church meetings. That Saturday afternoon was beautiful and sunny; we really enjoyed the scenery. The mountains were amazing, and we stopped near the top of Lewis Pass to walk out to a little pond for a few minutes. We tried taking pictures of the girls together, and found out that it is very hard to get Miss Joy to smile for a picture! We got one half decent one. There was hoar frost still in some places, even though it was afternoon–must not be any sunshine in those spots! There was still a tiny bit of snow up there, leftover from a storm nearly a week before. The children managed to scrape together enough for a few snowballs.

After the meetings, we were ready to go home Sunday afternoon and learned that Lewis Pass was closed. Two of our boys had gone over early Sunday morning and had to drive out around a slip on the grass verge; half an hour after they got through, the road closed. When we learned about it, the word was that it would be opened at 6:00 that evening, but we decided not to chance it. Instead, we went around the long way over Arthurs Pass, which takes an extra hour. We were very glad we did that, since Lewis Pass wasn’t opened until Tuesday or Wednesday morning. From Porters Pass to past Castle Hill, there was a lot of snow on the ground still from the previous storm. It was very icy by this time, but there were crowds of people along the road playing in it. It sure was beautiful as the sun set!

Elijah’s House

July 6, 2025 by NZ Filbruns 3 Comments

Back in March, I wrote a post about the house Elijah bought. We spent practically every Saturday in February, March and April working on doing it up, and he spent his Saturdays, as well as a lot of weekday evenings, working on it through May and June, too. It is finally ready for renters, after he cleans the oven and removes a pile of gravel, and his renters plan to move in in a few days. I didn’t get many pictures inside the house; it looked so bad I didn’t think to do that. I got a few pictures during the process, though.

I took the children to work at the house a couple of times when we needed to be in town during the week. Both times, we worked at masking the walls, since Simon spray-painted the ceilings and trim. We had already painted the walls with rollers.

James hates painting, but he rebuilt the wall of the garage and did other repairs, with his trusty sidekick Mr. Sweetie.

When I was getting ready to paint the window trims in the living room, after the carpet had already been laid, I asked Elijah what to protect the floor with. He got the roll of leftover carpet and turned it upside down! I don’t think I dripped onto it, but I was glad to have it there anyway.

This day, Elijah and James were working on running wires for the new lights and fans that needed to be installed in the kitchen and bathroom. An electrician was going to hook them up, but he didn’t want to run the wires. They had to take up some of the roofing iron because there wasn’t any other way to get at the space.

The last day I worked there was a day in June when we went to town for a funeral. After the funeral, we all went to the house to try to knock out the last few jobs, including a final clean. When it was time to go to the cemetery for the burial, I stayed to wash the kitchen floor while everyone else went, because I knew I wouldn’t be getting back to do that job and wanted to see it done. Just as I finished the floor and was ready to do the outside of the kitchen door, it started bucketing down–I decided to wait a few minutes to do that washing, and walked around the house to take pictures of the finished project, instead.

The kitchen. Not much has changed here, other than scrubbing the walls and cabinets and floor. Elijah patched the floor in a couple of places, and I painted two walls that needed patches.

The laundry, with toilet and bathroom to the left. This area looks 100% better! The walls and ceiling were very patchy, and the floor was rough.

The living room. There is a picture of this room on the post linked above. It has new carpeting, the walls and ceiling have been painted, and the old rusted-out stove has been replaced. The new one is larger, so the boys enlarged the hearth by adding a border.

The bedroom off the living room. This one needed to be sanded back and plastered all over.

Bedroom 1. This room had old, rough gib (drywall) that needed a skim coat all over. It had carpet–the only room that did–but it stunk. There was no door in the main doorway to the room. That door you see was there; see the next picture to get an idea of this gem!

Bedroom 2. This room had gib (drywall) that someone had started finishing but never got done. It also had a cracked window.

It is very satisfying to see this house shining! It looks immensely better than it did before, and smells nice and clean, too.

April 2025 Photos

June 8, 2025 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

I have some time this afternoon, so maybe I can catch up with posting photos! I’ll schedule posts ahead to spread them out a little.

We had fun one evening attempting to make Pippi Longstocking-style braids on Miss Joy!

One special evening, we got to attend a graduation ceremony for a number of local apprentices, including both Elijah and James. Elijah actually got signed off in September, but James was only signed off that week! The company who handled their studies invited all the new tradesmen and their families and workmates to a dinner at a local restaurant, and after the meal, presented them with their diplomas. It was quite a special occasion!

We are really enjoying these two budgies! The blue one, Reepicheep, is especially interesting–quite a character!

Mr. Imagination has a new obsession. He makes knives! These are a few of his recent creations.

I missed a couple of pictures of the cat who likes boxes! Here they are. Elijah had his bedroom door in the carport for a week or two to be painted, and Grizzly was delighted to find a piece of newspaper in one of the panels. Two of her favorite things–newspaper, in a “box!” The trailer makes a large box when she can’t find a cardboard one.

Little Miss cracked an egg one day and found a strange “egg” inside it. She decided this needed to be documented!

Tiger Moth

April 20, 2025 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Sometime in early March I was in Greymouth with the children and we noticed three small planes flying over in a triangle formation. They circled around in front of us and came toward us, in a straight line. We happened to be driving past the “airport” at that moment, and realized they were planning to land, so we pulled over to watch, since we had noticed by then that all three were biplanes. After they landed, we drove around to where we could get a better look at them, and several more that were already pulled up to the hanger. In the next day’s paper, we learned that they were Tiger Moths, and the owners were making a tour around the island. How fun to see them!

Elijah’s House

March 9, 2025 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Elijah bought a house! He put an offer on it in early December, and signed the final papers the end of January. Then, we all started working together to help him get it ready for renting. Here are the pictures I got the day he took possession.
