Miss Joy

Entertaining a Toddler With a Broken Leg

August 29, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Some time in July, Miss Joy and her big sister collided on a trampoline, and Miss Joy ended up with a broken leg. It was just a greenstick fracture, so not very serious, but she had her leg in a cast for a little over three weeks. She was walking on it only about nine days after the accident, and getting around pretty much normally, but the first few days were a bit challenging. It’s a good thing she has a naturally sunny disposition! The other hard part was near the end; I think the cast must have been irritating her, because little things that normally wouldn’t bother her at all made her scream. Maybe her leg was itchy, and she couldn’t figure out how to tell us? Anyway, here are some of the things she did during the time she had her cast on.

This first picture was a few days before she broke her leg. I had a bowl of beans on the counter, soaking, and when she needed something to, I gave her a sieve and a bowl and let her scoop beans and water. You’ll see down a little ways why I included this!

IMG_7688

The morning after the accident, Miss Joy couldn’t move below the waist at all. The only thing she could do was sit; she couldn’t even figure out how to roll over. She was sitting on the couch with her books, and asked me for a “Bible.” I figured out she wanted a songbook, so I gave it to her and she sang for us. You can hear her in this video clip.

The next day, she figured out how to crawl, and she was off! That evening, Esther gave her a permanent marker and showed her how to draw on her cast. You can see in this video how focused she was.

IMG_7692

Right around that time, she caught sight of another bowl of beans I was soaking when I carried her through the kitchen. “Beans!” she exclaimed. She couldn’t stand up, so I put her on the floor with the beans, making sure there wasn’t too much water in them. I didn’t want the plaster cast to get wet! She happily played with the beans for a long time.IMG_7693IMG_7694

One evening, she wanted more beans, but I didn’t have any soaking. Instead, I put rice on a tray and gave it to her. She spent an hour or so playing with that! We had to sweep it up a couple of times, but it was sure worth it.IMG_7695

She spent a lot of time looking at her books.IMG_7757IMG_7763

It didn’t end up being too hard an experience, after all. I sure wouldn’t want this to happen again, but we made it through, and she is as good as new again.

Miss Joy in June

July 25, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

We took a lot of pictures of Miss Joy in June! She loves to cuddle her babies,

03-IMG_7630

to draw, with Simon’s help,04-IMG_7632

and with Little Miss.05-IMG_7626

She started potty-training her babies,06-IMG_7638

discovered the joys of Garfield (look at those crossed feet!),08-IMG_7653

and got stuffed into a basket by an older brother.09-IMG_7628

She frequently asks me for a “pony” and then pulls it out right away.10-IMG_7648

She practices fine motor skills by snipping paper or cardstock into tiny bits all over the floor.11-IMG_7646

She cuddles her bears,12-IMG_0760

and snuggles in bed with her sister.31-IMG_0879

She is a dear little girl, and we can’t imagine life without her! We are so thankful for our little bundle of energy. She has every one of her family wrapped around her little finger—I enjoyed seeing her 17-year-old brother catering to her this morning.

April 2021 Photos

June 20, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Here are the rest of our photos from April—and a video clip of Miss Joy drawing! This little girl loves to draw. She frequently requests—or demands—paper and pencil; she wants to “ite!” Since these photos were taken, she has progressed from scribbling all over a piece of paper to drawing little circles. She also cuts things; scissors are her other frequent request. Yesterday, she cut one piece of scrap paper into little bits, then pointed to the stack and wanted another. It was soon in bits all over the floor, too!

01-IMG_757703-IMG_758004-IMG_7581

Simon helped a neighbor kill and skin a few sheep, and a few days later, he came home with one of them! He and Elijah soon had it cut into pieces. I’m so happy that they can—and enjoy—cutting up meat.15-IMG_541116-IMG_5414

Late one afternoon…I was making applesauce while Mr. Sweetie tried to finish his school work for the day.19-IMG_5421

A few weeks after Esther and her brothers built the shelves, she and I spent a day organizing the container. This is what it looked like when we started. We never got a picture when we were done, but it’s usable, now! It’s still crowded, but we can find things and get to them.20-IMG_5424

Miss Joy in March

May 16, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

In looking over our photos from March, I’m seeing a lot of them of one person! Miss Joy is quite popular, and very cute. She’s into everything, and jabbers about everything. We can even understand part of what she says!

Her favorite book is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? This copy was given to Elijah by his grandmother, probably 15 years ago. It has been taped together and glued together, and is still being enjoyed! I just ordered a replacement, though, a board book this time, because this one got left in a windowsill overnight and the condensation soaked it. It’s still readable, but the pages are all falling out and the covers are swollen. We can’t be without this book, though!

IMG_0553

Mr. Imagination built a couple of hammocks, and his little sisters enjoyed them.IMG_0596

Helping the big boys mow lawn! She must have been trying to figure out how to start it.IMG_0628

There are two little babies at church, and Miss Joy loves them. So does her big brother Simon!IMG_0704

Miss Joy is an artist. She loves to draw! She often asks for pen and “papee!” She wants to “ite!” She focuses hard on what she is doing, and keeps at it until her piece of paper is covered with her scribbles.IMG_5392IMG_5393IMG_5394

She also loves to climb in bed with Little Miss! It’s so much fun to read at bedtime.IMG_5395

I’m not sure what she was doing here in Esther’s room.IMG_5396

Sitting in the windowsill behind the couch. This is where Brown Bear met its demise.IMG_7558

One afternoon she came marching into the living room brandishing a croquet mallet in one hand, a block of wood in the other, and dangling a toothbrush from her mouth!IMG_7561IMG_7563

Another day, she figured out how to climb into the washing machine. IMG_7566Can you tell we enjoy having this little girl around? She sure adds sparkle to our days!

And, here is a video I just remembered making.

Miss Joy in December

January 3, 2021 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

This little girl keeps herself busy, and keeps us entertained! She doesn’t like hats, but kept this old fireman’s hat on long enough for someone to grab a photo.23-IMG_7065

She was engrossed in the movie everyone else was watching! Can you see what she chose as a seat? It’s a 10-liter paint bucket on its side. She was actually sitting on it, though it’s hard to tell from this picture.26-IMG_7069Her daddy helped her walk in this empty potato bag.

2-IMG_7072

We found her one evening diligently scrubbing her foot with a cloth. I couldn’t quite capture her scrubbing on her foot, because she moves too fast, but she worked at it for about five minutes.4-IMG_7075Does she like pudding?

05-IMG_441506-IMG_4416

Tired baby!07-IMG_442208-IMG_4423

She loves brushing her teeth. Any time she sees the toothbrushes, or someone brushing their teeth, she wants to do hers, too. That’s Mr. Imagination brushing his with Daddy and Miss Joy.09-IMG_0324

This is a “canoe” that Mr. Imagination built for her.10-IMG_4446

Miss Joy spent a long time carefully putting her blankie into this bucket, and then climbed in on top of it.11-IMG_444912-IMG_4452

One evening we went to the park across the road from us. Several of us played a game, and Daddy took the younger ones to the swings. Miss Joy loved the gravel under the swings!13-IMG_4467

She loves to feed the cats. Then, she helps herself, too. Esther caught her eating with them one day—putting her mouth down to pick pieces up just like the cats do. She’s such a mimic—but this is one thing I’d rather she not do!14-IMG_0336

She went into the milking shed one day and found the jar of salve we use on the cows’ teats. She had it spread liberally all over her face, arms and legs. She had pulled her pants up so she could get it all the way up to her knees. What a mess!

15-IMG_4478

Here’s a short video clip Esther got of her one evening when Mr. Diligence was playing with her. I laugh every time I watch it!

Miss Joy in November

November 30, 2020 by NZ Filbruns 1 Comment

Miss Joy is as busy as ever! Almost everything she does is awfully cute. We love watching her running around investigating things—although the times when she’s getting tired and, as a result, gets into everything she shouldn’t have, are rather annoying. She’s learning to talk a little; she knows where the chocolate buttons are kept and when she thinks about them or sees that cupboard open she starts enthusiastically asking (with sign language) “Please!” Sometimes she even says “Chocolate!” She also knows how to say “Up,” and “Mom.”

I walked into the living room one day and found Mr. Sweetie and Mr. Imagination laying down playing with their animals, and Miss Joy had just flopped down to play, too.

01-IMG_6967

I found her on the couch last night, reading her book.02-IMG_6998

07-IMG_6999

She loves to eat!03-IMG_6951

Books and babies—her two favorite things to play with!04-IMG_689006-IMG_6953

She sees everyone else writing in school books, so she wants to, too. The problem is that sometimes it isn’t a schoolbook, but a library book…or the wall…or….07-IMG_6945

I don’t remember what she was laughing at here, but it must have been funny!09-IMG_6950

Miss Joy—October 2020

November 3, 2020 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Here are pictures of our favorite toddler in her 14th month!

We had crepes with whipped cream, sweetened yogurt, bananas and chocolate sauce for breakfast one morning. She loved that breakfast!

02-IMG_683805-IMG_6842

She loves to climb into things. We use this crate to take our Bibles to church. As soon as it was unloaded, she sat in it.08-IMG_6867

She found my teacup on the couch one morning when I forgot to take it to the kitchen. She loves that cup!10-IMG_687021-IMG_6873

Gayle brought firewood home from the mill one day, and she helped unload it. She was handing pieces to him. Little Miss helped, too.11-IMG_6877

Gotta put the earmuffs on! The big people do!12-IMG_6862

She found her favorite big brother on the couch and had to climb on him.13-IMG_688015-IMG_688114-IMG_6860

One afternoon she was playing with her brothers in the empty section next to our house. As you can see, she found some mud!

More of Miss Joy

September 16, 2020 by NZ Filbruns 2 Comments

Most of the photos I find on my memory card are of Miss Joy! She’s quite photogenic, in our opinion, right now.

I don’t know who took this photo—I suspect possibly Mr. Imagination.

1-IMG_6656

She loves apples—and she loves boxes and climbing!2-IMG_6658

One warm, sunny afternoon, she took off on an exploratory trip. She absolutely loves going outside, and can’t understand when we won’t let her go out (because it’s cold and wet!).

07-IMG_6669When she turned around, I got this video clip:

05-IMG_6673I was quite amused one day to see her sitting in these tubs that were laying on their side!

01-IMG_668908-IMG_6690

This is a very common sight. If she’s at all tired or hungry, she finds her blankie and brings it to me, saying, “Eye-guy-guy.”13-IMG_6691While I was reading aloud yesterday, Mr. Intellectual was laying on the couch. Miss Joy climbed on top of him and sat herself down to read a book.

06-IMG_670414-IMG_6709When her daddy came home from work and squatted down to clean his work shoes, she grabbed one of my crocs that was handy, got herself a towel, and cleaned my shoe! She quite diligently worked at it for several minutes, as long as Gayle was cleaning his shoes.

04-IMG_6711

One afternoon when she and I were the only ones at home, I was enjoying watching her play. I decided to get a quick video, just because times like that are so fleeting.

Miss Joy Turns One

August 26, 2020 by NZ Filbruns Leave a Comment

Miss Joy had her birthday last week. We have a one-year-old again! We finally celebrated tonight; first, Esther was away, and then everyone came down with a tummy bug. Tonight, finally, enough people were feeling better that I made a pumpkin custard and we whipped some cream—two of her favorite foods. We gave her a bowlful of it and she was delighted!

04-IMG_664508-IMG_6647

She continues to be a very busy little girl. We sure enjoy having her in our family! She loves books.

07-IMG_6612

She loves water and was thrilled to figure out that she could reach things at the sink one morning.13-IMG_661415-IMG_6616

Little Miss gave her some food—and she gave it to the cat!11-IMG_662512-IMG_6631

Escaping outside is so much fun—especially when there’s mud!18-IMG_6633She has fallen in love with dolls, especially this one, although she also lugs around the ones that are nearly her own size, too.

10-IMG_6638She loves to play the piano, too.

05-IMG_6639She got hold of a small New Testament today. I was in another room sewing, and was showed this picture by a happy big brother.

Miss Joy in July

August 17, 2020 by NZ Filbruns 1 Comment

I just looked over my photos from July, and most of them were of Miss Joy! Do you think we’re enjoying her?

This was just before she started walking; she figured out that she could push the crate around.

17-IMG_6511

We roasted a turkey one evening, and she was delighted to be given some of the bones.

10-IMG_651422-IMG_6516

I made a carob cake with a fudgy frosting, and when she climbed up to the table she was delighted to find something yummy!

05-IMG_6521

One of her brothers got these pictures before he left for work one morning.

01-IMG_652314-IMG_6524

She loves to climb into the window and look out.

11-IMG_652523-IMG_652634-IMG_652837-IMG_6529

She has been eating—and loving—ice cream for months already, but this was the first time she was handed a cone of her own. She loved it!

04-IMG_653418-IMG_6535

All worn out!

Checking out the cat’s tail! Princess has trained her by now to leave her alone

36-IMG_6578

Yes, we took her down from here as soon as the photo was snapped! She’s rather daring.

07-IMG_6580

Toes are so fun!08-IMG_658119-IMG_6582

She loves my cup.31-IMG_6590

She discovered the piano recently.
